| 794026 | 2009-07-22 05:52:00 | iPhone prototype goes missing ( . venturebeat . com/2009/07/21/iphone-prototype-goes-missing-chinese-worker-investigated-commits-suicide/" target="_blank">digital . venturebeat . com) The intense pressure on Apple's Asian partners to keep new product details secret may have played a part in a sad story According to reports coming out of China, 25-year-old Sun Danyong, an employee of electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn, was given 16 prototype fourth-generation iPhones to ship to Apple . At some point before he got to the shipping facility, he realized he had only 15 . His search around the factory turned up nothing, and he reported the missing unit to his boss . A couple days later, three Foxconn employees conducted a search of Sun's home and, at least according to some accusations, detained and roughed up Sun in the process . The next day, a little after 3 a . m . according to security videos at his apartment building, Sun jumped out of a window to his death . It'd be a stretch to lay any of the blame on Apple's doorstep, as some no doubt will, but the pressure for secrecy all along the supply chain is real, and I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised if somebody cracks . |
