793576 2009-07-21 02:53:00 Seen it yet? :spam

It pops up even if you have one or two or more pop-up blockers running and I cannot get to it quickly enuff to ABP/Block it .

It runs and hides! Really!

I know the economy's rough and the times they are a-changin' and companies have to hustle some coins, but they said it was free and they didn't indicate it was a temporary situation, and I downloaded it for free and I intend to freely use it until the free GoogleOS goes into effect .

So - where does it live in my 'puter?

Can I kill it? :badpc: And don't give me any platitudes, snide remarks and "you-got-what-you-paid-for's" just this ONE TIME, OK?

793577 2009-07-21 03:10:00 Is AVG still available?
Since it changed hands, the new owners appear to be flogging every last cent out of the near moribund remains.
If you must persisst in wrestling with M$ inoperative systems, why not use Avast!. Just as free initially, much free-er in use, and it works.

793579 2009-07-21 03:32:00 Joe, I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed that someone of your caliber still uses AVG! :dogeye:

It's no good, seriously. Dump AVG, get Avast. Come on...

793580 2009-07-21 03:43:00 Just dont go into Avast's on-access protection control option too often (if you get Home). It nags you to get Pro :p Speedy Gonzales (78)
793581 2009-07-21 04:53:00 I'm in a holding patter on AVG. It has served me pretty well and with being behind a physical firewall (router) I have been pretty bullet-proof so far.

I wonder who wins the race: AVG-Free will demand $$, or G-O/S will be out of β.

What I figger to do: Don't laugh - please!

1. Dump Windows and Mr. Bill forever!
2. New hdd for a <boot> device, prolly 120g or so
3. Install Ubuntu (shriek!) and get it at least runnable to get online with Firefox.
4. Download G-O/S and run, skipping merrily on my happy little feet for the rest of my life.

Now - I know everybody here's had their personal guffaw :banana:clap at my attempts to get L-anything to run, but if Ubuntu will run on a solo-boot, then I got it made. I HAD it working once - and then it secretly, silently removed ALL 94+ of MY RIPPED DVDs and EVERY STEENKIN'' one of my 4,500+ MP3s and WMAs in an eye-twinkle.

Assuming (I assume a lot) that IF I JUST have Ubuntu installed on it's own virgin <hdd/a> and that I can make it run - I'll be able to at last to say: "I dood it!" and be telling the truth.

793582 2009-07-21 20:00:00 Check this out. I have copied these instructions for you from this site.

www.lockergnome.com

Back on August 8th, 2009 I did an article on how to remove the notification area from the free version of AVG 8. [Original article is here] Since than, version 8.5 has been introduced and the old instructions no longer work. Yesterday reader Sime provided the script that now needs to be run, using the same instructions I originally provided. Here is the new updates information:

Follow the below steps to disable the appearance of the irritating AVG 8 notification area:
1. Open Notepad or another plain text editor.
2. Copy and paste the following four lines from this page into the text editor:

@echo off
ren avgmwdef_us.mht avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
ren avgresf.dll avgresf.dll.bak
ren avgfree_us.mht avgfree_us.mht.bak

3. Save the text document containing the above three lines in the location where AVG 8 is installed. By default, this will be C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8. Save the file as something like “AVGNotifyOff.bat”, without the quotes. It really doesn’t matter how you name the file, so long as you can identify it, and it ends in the “.bat” extension, so Windows sees it as a batch file.
4. Once the file’s saved, close the text editor, navigate in Windows Explorer or My Computer to C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8, locate the batch file document you saved in step 3 above, and you should be able to run the file by pressing and releasing the Enter key. All the batch file does is rename two files with a “.bak” (backup) extension, so the files are still there, it’s just that AVG can’t see them any more, and you should find that the bottom line of the AVG user interface window no longer displays the “Hide notification, button” item.

Note: Trying to run the batch file more than once is useless unless an AVG program update has replaced the two files which have been renamed. This trick is subject to stop working if AVG releases a program update which uses a different method to display the irritating notification.

If you should want or need to undo the above trick, all you need to do is navigate to C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8, locate each of the two files with a “.bak” extension, press and release the F2 function key to bring up the rename dialog, press the End key to move the cursor to the end of the filename, then press and release the Backspace key four times to delete the “.bak” extension, then press and release the Enter key to keep the new name. This procedure must be done three times, once for each of the two files with the “.bak” extension. However, you shouldn’t need to undo the trick.

I hope you find this trick useful. Enjoy.

793583 2009-07-22 01:43:00 Did it, and so far it looks good. I also added your text to a READ ME file in and around the same area of the AVG Notifications area for future reference.

Thanks heaps.
