He may have got lippy with the locals, which in NZ will 99.9% of the time result in a hiding. Police may know full story, Northland is a very dangerous place especially for people in camper vans. In early Jan this year in my camper bus at Kaitaia parked overnight outside United Video shop. This is a NZCMA overnight park, some drunk maoris at 2am started yelling at us and shaking the bus my wife and kids were terrified. Christ I would have paid a thousand dollars for a nice gun. Rung police and 3 minutes later they arrived, smashed one crooks head into a lamp post another crooks head into the back of a trucks tailgate. Next morning there was blood and gristle everywhere. Cop said dont park in places like this its not safe. But it has traumatized the kids and wife, later on in feb we parked in supermarket carpark in Thames kids and wife couldnt sleep. |

Even if he got "lippy", it still doesn't justify getting his face mutilated. I doubt you provoked the w*nk*rs who terrorised you and your family. But the same thing could have happened to you, your wife and maybe even your kids. There are alot of crazies out there. But surely you must see that the guy deserves some justice, right? Even if he is a tourist. If anyone thinks otherwise, consider the Bali bombings, we were outraged that our countrymen died in it. But since it was in Indonesia, maybe their government shouldn't have prosecuted the people who were behind that? |

Why shouldn't people go about their lawful business without feeling worried about the actions of a few misguided idiots? |

My sentiments exactly. It's a basic human right, to be able to defend oneself. But as in your case, if you came out of your camper swinging a bat/whatever to defend your family, you'd be the one going to the jail house for aggrivated assault. Self-defence? Hell no, unjustified force! |

Unfortunately, everyone thinks they are 'responsible' - who would decide? The authorities have enough trouble no trying to keep guns out of the hands of the undesirables now, when we're not permitted to 'carry'... I wouldn't be holding up the USA as an example of a great place for responsible people.... |

| 793493 | 2009-07-20 23:01:00 | My plan for NZ would be a holder of a firearms licence with an additional self defence permit attached to it. Australia has a Shooters party with some seats in Senate, might get off the ground here there are a lot of shooters here definetly more than threshold for MMP. Would be good if they could get into a coalition government with National and Act party and get some gun rights. One would be the right to bear arms like USA. |
