For every successful defense there's a poorly formulated and argued prosecution - and the prosecution has far more resources at their disposal than even the wealthiest defendant.

I doubt Clayton Weatherston will get anything less than the mandatory life imprisonment with a 17 yr non-parole - and I'm picking 18 or 19 yrs non-parole.

You are very wrong on that one.

Anyone know when the sentencing will be?

You think the judge will be sympathetic? From what I heard of the case I very much doubt it - and it seems to me that Weatherstons's attitude will not endear him much to the people who will prepare his pre-sentence report. After all, the crime of murder is no longer alleged - it is proven. He did not manage to mitigate his crime during the trial so his story will not aid him in sentencing as it was rejected by a jury.

Sentencing is usually about a month after conviction.

793865 2009-07-22 05:04:00 Can't they just take him out the back & shoot him?

Surely as an Economics lecturer, he can see the benefit to the taxpayer.....

793866 2009-07-22 05:15:00 You back down far too easily.

Probably Paul, but I hope he at least re-thought what he had said. :)

793867 2009-07-22 05:25:00 Preventative detention is the only sentence appropriate for this nutcase - he's shown absolutely no remorse (not just killing Sophie, but putting her family through hell throughout the trial), and will probably do it again to another girlfriend who "provokes" him.

Since we're too PC in this country to execute these people, then he should rot in jail.

For that you want preventive detention.
