Its when you have an engine with 24 vdc and alternator and everything else including glow plugs are 12 vdc.
Sometimes if batteries arent too run down jump starting using one set of leads and one battery may work.

792967 2009-07-21 02:32:00 What then is wrong with just using "computer protecting" jumper leads?

That property is just a LED or two and I don't see much protection from (ahem) ignorance of the insipid user there.

Not you and your situation here: I like to kill old wives and their tales, so please don't take it personally.

I have seen a few smoked (well, they don't actually smoke - but it is kind of a generic US term for "took a dump" or whatever works in NZ-speak) ECMs when the OWNER of the vehicle with the dead battery - when he leaves the ignition ON - and then some kindly Samaritan - helps by putting the cables on even correctly - and invisible and instantaneous damage results to the ECM.

UNfortunately it's usually the "some kindly Samaritan" who roaches HIS system and the other guy gets off with no damage at all.

Take my word for it - I have seen all permutations of electrical damage to things that for all intents and purposes appear to be completely bulletproof and indestructible - TO THE NORMAL PERSON.

That's the caveat -> NORMAL PERSON. The world is chock-full of UN-normal persons, present company excluded, of course!

I like whacking people's piñata. Now I gotta find an olde wife with another tale to kill.
