878166 2010-04-19 10:04:00 What are you using now? Speedy Gonzales (78)
878167 2010-04-19 10:11:00 The Screwed Computer is running Ubuntu Live disc

Im using the wifi on my phone... The other computer I have is a celeron with 184mb of ram, and virutally no HDD space... running Windows ME
Sir Prospect (14735)
878168 2010-04-19 10:26:00 Does the celeron, have a floppy then?? And do you have a flash drive? Or does ubuntu have some kind of disk error checking program on it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
878169 2010-04-19 10:30:00 Yes, the Celeron has a floppy disk drive, Yes I have a USB flash drive, I dont really use Ubuntu, so im not sure about the disk checking, but I did do a memory check, and that found no errors either.

Im wondering why there are no minidump files?

878170 2010-04-19 10:37:00 Bugger :angry the BSOD said it was writing them. OK

From the original post #1 - did you try the system restore option, wind the PC back a day or two to before the problem happened. heres How (www.bleepingcomputer.com) or select command prompt and type in rstrui.exe <press enter> If restore is run, it may boot normally again, other wise it may fix the problem enough to boot into safe mode at least.

878171 2010-04-20 05:32:00 Wainuitech - No luck, I tried the system restore option, it went as it should, i picked a restore date, then it said (c:/) has errors, I clicked the "check disk for errors" button, it started checking the disk, and for some reason, it went back to the "(c:/) has errors dialog box, and refused to continue.

the "Disk has errors box":

The checking disk box:

This was what I get when i run chkdsk in the command prompt:

878172 2010-04-20 06:03:00 This says (www.vistaheads.com) it may need reformatting, or the hdd is knackered. The last post Speedy Gonzales (78)
878173 2010-04-20 06:25:00 Try this -- From the command prompt, type in chkdsk C: /r <press enter>.

If you still get the drive in read only, you can also try chkdsk /x/r

to see all the options chkdsk /?

As one site says --
/x
Forces the volume to dismount. Also invalidates all open file handles. This should be avoided in Desktop Editions of Vista, because of possibility ofdata loss/corruption. so use the X command at your own risk -- But then again, its broken anyway :(

878174 2010-04-20 06:47:00 After some re-booting and attempting System Restore again, the chkdsk has started to run, it been running for over an hour, and is still..... a far way off... I think il just let it run and see what happens, ive ticked both option (auto. fix file sys errors, scan for/attempt recovery of bad sectors), Il do what you say Wainiuitech if the chkdsk fails.

Speedygonzales - I dont think the HDD is knackered, because using the ubuntu livecd, I was able to access all the files on the HDD??? would this be possible if the HDD was knackered?
Sir Prospect (14735)
878175 2010-04-20 06:54:00 Could be the partition windows is on thats knackered / corrupt. And since Ubuntu is on another, it probably isnt affected Speedy Gonzales (78)
