877610 2010-04-17 13:45:00 So, would I have to do it this way:
1) log on remotely using team viewer, use drive management to merge all partitions, and then format C: (to wipe the drive clean and destroy the old data)
2) Use a NLite installation disc to install everything, and if I set it up right it should do everything pretty much by itself?

Can I create the NLite disc form any computer if I have the Win XP install discs, or does it have to be created on the target PC?

877611 2010-04-17 14:20:00 Only prob, you cant format a hdd if youre using it, and youre in windows. If its the only hdd in the case. The version of windows you want to slipstream, has to be installed as well

You also need the updates (NLite doesnt download them for you). I suppose you could use something like autopatcher. But it wont slipstream, it'll let you create an ISO, and you install the updates after XP has been installed

877612 2010-04-17 21:18:00 how about using UBCD4Win to format the drive via VNC? nedkelly (9059)

You can create the disc on any computer (it doesn't even have to run XP - I create XP discs with nLite on Vista). The drivers you use, however, MUST be for the target computer.

nLite can create an answer file as well, which, among other things, can tell Windows what partitions to create and how to format them. :)

877614 2010-04-17 21:31:00 I know, I used an answer file. You would have to use something like teamviewer, install Nlite on the PC here, burn the ISO on the PC here (thats if you've got a burner). Thats probably the only way youre going to do it

Because, you cant format the hdd from there (if there's only 1 hdd, and even if you manage to format it (somehow), then you wont be using teamviewer after

877615 2010-04-17 21:32:00 But what you can do is make the XP CD completely automatic (including formatting), sending them a disc, then tell them to boot from it (explaining how to do so) and leave it alone. :) pcuser42 (130)

OK maybe I'm going blind, But I have just looked at the latest Nlite (mine was quite old so I got the latest) - and cant see that option to format the drive or create partitions -- Where is that function located please. wainuitech (129)

Hmm, maybe it's not in nLite, but it can be manually added - from here (support.microsoft.com):

If you want Windows Setup to delete all partitions on the hard disk and to create a new partition, you must include the Repartition command in the Winnt.sif file. Under [Unattended] , insert a new line, and then type the following: Repartition=Yes

(Probably shouldn't post while tired in future :sleep)
