877572 2010-04-17 13:48:00 Ah should have done it in PM. Oh well too late. Be there shortly Speedy Gonzales (78)
877573 2010-04-17 15:16:00 I have a feeling its short circuiting. As it says here (en.kioskea.net). Since it doesnt even appear in windows, or device manager. If you try this you may have to get a similar screw, but get a plastic one. As someone said on that link

Acer aspire model 50... DVD drive disappears... SOLVED. It's actually a manufacturing problem. The dvd metal case actually touches the the interior metal case of the laptop causing a shortcircuit. Solution: Remove The DVD drive from its place by removing the screw of the drive from the back of laptop and then pull the drive gently out from the laptop case. At the end of DVD case you can see the metalic extension, with a little hole. Cover that entire area with something, i used a sticker, but let that hole free, so you can put the screw back in once you put the DVD drive back in to the laptop case. That's it. If your DVD drive has no other defects, it should work. It's a common problem to all Acer Aspire 5 series (5100, 5101, 5020, etc etc).

Or as someone else said, the ribbon may have come out, and you'll have to pull it to bits to fix it

877575 2010-04-17 23:26:00 When I checked this laptop last night, I noticed a couple of things.

I ran ccleaner, and there were 2 entries with Chinese characters in them (no path). I deleted them. And altho WU is up to date (besides IE8, which hasn't been installed YET). There is NO mention of SP1 or 2 (under system). All it says is upgrade Vista? Is this normal?

Shouldn't there be something to say SP1 or SP2 is on it (if they're not in windowsupdate)? It just seems strange that the cd / dvd has disappeared altogether, SINCE it was fixed. And there were a few crashes as well. Not too sure if this is because of the short circuiting (if it is short circuiting). It crashed when I went to send a file to the desktop (CLSID verification has stopped working or something - just checked in Google, look like its a common prob for some), using teamviewer. Looks like the firewall may have blocked something, why it crashed. And it kinda stopped when I went into services.

877576 2010-04-17 23:31:00 Dont go talking about bloody vista updates to me  :devil

Just done two Vistas last week. There was a sh1t load of Updates come through - :waughh: Including IE8 - then FINALLY SP1 appeared , after rebooting - a few more then SP2 -- You HAVE to have SP1 installed before SP2, you cant simply put in SP2 and ignore SP1.

To answer
How would you do that when your Vista is on a DVD in the first place you can install Via A usb drive. But it does sound like a hardware fault someplace.

Give the laptop a very SLIGHT twist with it turned off, this may move a few parts, but I DO MEAN SLIGHT.

877577 2010-04-19 10:31:00 We pulled the Laptop apart and found that a screw was missing that held the drive in place . I was ever hopeful that, that may have been the problem but no :(
Windows update has only just offered me SP1 and now I am dl SP2 .
I thought I would buy a replacement drive and rang Dick Smiths . They said they had them for laptops and they started in price from $100 upwards . We went in to town to be told that no they do not sell DVD drives for laptops and that as my laptop is a couple of years old I should just look on Trademe as I will probably want to replace my laptop soon . :horrified What a throw away society we live in . I happen to like my laptop and it has served me well ( until now LOL) Replacement drive will have to wait until next payday now . The washing machine has thrown a hissy fit and needs a new part .
I have MS Office on DVD how do I put that on a usb drive? So that is where we are up to folks . Thanks for the help and input .

877578 2010-04-19 11:00:00 I have MS Office on DVD how do I put that on a usb drive?you will need to take the DVD to another PC that has a working DVD drive, copy/paste the complete contents to a USB drive, then plug that in, open the USB directory, and double click the setup file - it will install as normal then. wainuitech (129)
877579 2010-04-19 11:11:00 Thanks for that, finally something ridiculously easy to do.:D Finally got SP2 installed after 2 failures. :horrified ollieogg (6593)
877580 2010-04-19 11:20:00 See what happens if you go back to device manager and scan for hardware changes again. It MAY appear  Did you cover the hole with some tape? Speedy Gonzales (78)
