793494 2009-07-20 23:07:00 Dont know the full story why the strangers were provoked into attacking him.
He may have got lippy with the locals, which in NZ will 99.9% of the time result in a hiding.
Police may know full story, Northland is a very dangerous place especially for people in camper vans.

All you've done is pull this theory out of the air, thrown in some imaginary "facts" and presented a belief of yours as fact - in order to counter what the journalist has said. He said he was set upon from behind without warning but you assert that he provoked strangers into attacking him.

I'll take the journalist's presentation of the tourist's story I think. It's my experience that some people need no provocation to be violent or to rob people.

793495 2009-07-20 23:09:00 My plan for NZ would be a holder of a firearms licence with an additional self defence permit attached to it.
Australia has a Shooters party with some seats in Senate, might get off the ground here there are a lot of shooters here definetly more than threshold for MMP. Would be good if they could get into a coalition government with National and Act party and get some gun rights.
One would be the right to bear arms like USA.

American gun rights, aren't based on self defence. American gun rights are based on... The capitulation King George!

Act are supportred to an extent by the gun lobby. But there isn't enough of a presence in NZ.

Next PF1 debate should be the gun topic. :)

793496 2009-07-21 01:38:00 People who just park up in some rest area or side of the road are asking for trouble.

What part of the fracking world do you come from?? Bit like say women who walk home at nite are asking to be raped..

You could be right there may not be enough shooters that care enough in NZ to get it off the ground.
Although another malicious prosecution by the police for someone trying to defend life and property may tip enough shooters over the edge to get a 5% of MMP.

So do you think that if you provoke strangers into attacking you - or if you "have got lippy with the locals, which in NZ will 99.9% of the time result in a hiding" (according to you) - you should then be able to whip out a firearm and shoot them (so that you could defend life and property)?

I wouldn't place much credit in the reporter's side of the story. Every time there is a news report on anything I have first hand knowledge of it's complete bollocks. The only sensible conclusion is that it's all bollocks.
