877535 2010-04-17 09:02:00 My laptop was acting funny and went into safe mode and ran malwarebytes. It found 7 and then clicked remove all. After reboot I am not able to do anything with exe. I get a "open with" box and "c:\winxp\system32\rundll32.exe application not found. What do I do? puffins808 (14043)
877536 2010-04-17 09:17:00 What make and model of laptop and I guess since it says XP that it is. Does it start in safe mode? gary67 (56)
877537 2010-04-17 09:35:00 But does it boot into windows? Speedy Gonzales (78)
877538 2010-04-20 01:20:00 YES, it does boot in safe and regular mode. Sorry I have not been online. puffins808 (14043)
877539 2010-04-20 01:26:00 c:\winxp\system32\rundll32.exe Thats a BUG - there is no such legit file, the real path for XP should be C:\windows\System32.

If it starts in either Normal or safe mode, click start/ run type in msconfig when it opens select the startup Tab, look for that entry in the list and untick it.

Then the PC needs to be cleaned out / Checked for bugs correctly.

Post a hijackthis log --- App download from a link in speedys sig.

877540 2010-04-20 01:39:00 Thank you for your reply, but like I said it will not let me go into anything like "run". It p open a pop up box "open with". puffins808 (14043)
877541 2010-04-20 01:41:00 BTW: When I tried to open for example malwarebytes again it says "c:\winxp\system32\rundll32.exe missing" puffins808 (14043)
877542 2010-04-20 01:49:00 What ever the bugs were sounds like they have screwed the file associations.

try this -- Go HERE (www.dougknox.com) - locate the EXE fix, (9th down) download it, extract out the reg file, right click / Merge -- may be able to double click it to install. It should fix the exe associations, and allow things to open.

Edited: the bug has changed the system, it thinks it needs to run c:\winxp\system32\rundll32.exe, which is wrong, it wont open because its been removed.

The "real" rundll32 is in C:\windows\System32\rundll32.exe

Edited 2: you may also need to replace the real rundll32 - heres how (support.microsoft.com)
