794054 2009-07-22 07:18:00 Hi all,

Just wondering if its possible to get a freeview DVR for < $500? Or am I simply dreaming?

Looking here:
www.freeviewnz.tv

The cheapest (Only?) is $1149, a little over my price range, but it'd still be a nice feature to have. Theres the DVB-S one that Metla mentioned a while back, but (if the test works out well) I'd prefer to get DVB-T for HD.

Any ideas / recommendations / thoughts / comments?

Cheers

794055 2009-07-22 07:40:00 If you have a spare PC, you could set it up to be a media centre (and hook it up to the TV), other than that, I haven't seen a Freeview HD PVR <$500 :(. davidmmac (4619)
794056 2009-07-22 07:41:00 Go to dtvforum.co.nz and read the zinwell hack thread. You can modify the Zinwell using firmware from Hong Kong to turn it into a fairly decent PVR. apsattv (7406)

Wonder if there's any others?

Anyways, might go check out this Zinwell stuff then ;) thanks

794058 2009-07-22 08:24:00 I would rather get something like USB or PCI. A lot cheaper, and does exactly the same thing. You could get one and a monitor that supports HD for less than $1000 or even $500 Speedy Gonzales (78)

But that means he will need a computer permanently connected to the TV, a dedicated one..

794060 2009-07-22 08:50:00 So, its still way less than $1000-1500. Thats what I may do, biff the TV out (hardly watch it anyway), chuck this monitor in the cabinet, since the kb and mouse are wireless.

Connect the Xbox to the monitor, put the case in the cabinet, connect that to the monitor. Then connect the monitor to the stereo :p Have 6:1 / 5:2 for the PC and whatever for the USB tuner. And play DVD's from the Xbox. Unless, something like a RCA to VGA cable exists. Then I'll connect the stereo's DVD to the monitor instead.

794061 2009-07-22 09:17:00 What you described Speedy is basically what I have here - minus the Xbox.

The Saturn / telstra Decoder is plugged into a switch, that switch connects to the TV & PC.

We can watch DVD's from the PC, the TV then becomes a big monitor, opening media center, and we can watch/record TV if we want or as we normally have it the TV on its own with the PC off.

The audio from the PC is connected to the stereo for sound.

794062 2009-07-22 09:32:00 I have a non-HD HTPC already... just really want a dedicated DVR ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
