879285 2010-04-23 08:19:00 I'm just looking at the two versions of ubuntu studio to download, one the 32bit and the other a 64bit, and setup on my computer but I'm unsure of which to get.

The Toshiba laptop runs two intel X86's T2500 @2GHz and I'm thinking that 2 x 32 bit processors equals 64 bit... and because I've seen core 2 somewhere or other on the Toshiba.

If I am indeed 64bit then does that matter at all with programs sitting atop the OS or do they also need to be 64bit... or is this only a hardware level issue?

879286 2010-04-23 08:23:00 Your CPU is 32 bit only according to Intel (ark.intel.com) bob_doe_nz (92)

Oh he meant a dual core cpu not dual cpus

879291 2010-04-24 00:47:00 Even two 32 bit CPUs in SMP do not equal one 64 Bit CPU!!

Why do you want Ubuntu Studio anyway?

Unless you need the realtime kernel, you're better off with standard Ubuntu and changing it and adding programs you want, if you want to use it for normal use as well.

879292 2010-04-24 20:52:00 Okay, The laptops a Toshiba with two x 2Ghz cpu's and device manager doesn't tell me that it's dual core or two separate processors so how do I know?

As for whether two 32bits equal one 64bits. I think basic electronics and whether it in parallel or series... This I don't know either so I ask.

As for whether I use Ubuntu studio or the basic Ubantu... I don't know that either. I'm not a computer whiz by any stretch of the imagination but I am trying. This PC I'm writing on was built from parts and I got it going on an old 98se disc and the laptop I've got had been reformatted and had xp loaded but no drivers installed for the actual machine and I got that sorted so I can kinda find my way around the upper levels of 'Puters but I started late, 2000, and I've never done anything in DOS so sorry chaps, for not being as clever as you guys.

But I'm willing to learn what I have to to get into the open source revolution but it's idealism more than being pragmatic. I don't want to learn programming language just to record music and surf the net. I just want a hassle free OS that ain't linked to Microsoft that allows me to do what I'm best at.

Now before we go any further... another possibly stupid question.
I've downloaded the Ubuntu .iso file at 1.5Gb and nero won't burn it, as an .iso file as the CD isn't big enough....

Okay I get that CD's are 700Mb and the file is 1.5Gb but isn't that somewhat beside the point with an .iso file? or do I need to take the .iso file to someone with a DVD burner and get it cut onto a DVD?

Why I even ask this, as it seems fairly obvious to me that 1.5Gb won't fit on .7Gb but it says on the Ubuntu site that one downloads the file then burns a CD to then boot from so can someone please set me straight on this.

879293 2010-04-24 20:56:00 right click mycomputer and select properties. It will tell you what cpu you have.
The normal ubuntu image is a cd size.

879294 2010-04-24 21:19:00 Sorry about that little tirade of mine. Okay I get it.

One more question then I think I'm good to go.

The guy who originally sold me on Ubuntu said that once loaded the 'puter can be hooked up to the net and Ubuntu will go off in search of drivers for the machine. That would be excellent!

In the likelyhood this isn't so will cutting a recovery disc with the current XP OS result in a disc full of relevant drivers already being used?

Or am I in the territory I was in where I use the CD I burned with all the drivers I downloaded from the Toshiba site.
