879014 2010-04-22 09:22:00 I have just done a clean install of XP on this machine, and everything is up to date, and managed to find all the drivers I believe but either I am missing something or am blind but I cant get any sound.

In Control Panel / Sound it says there is No Audio device and everything is greyed out, but as with the need to install the drivers before I could see the wireless adaptor in my ignorance I assume this means I have to find the drivers for the audio.

Its not my machine and I would like to get this going for them but I am stumped and cant seem to find anything on the Toshiba site or elsewhere (maybe I dont know what I am looking for)

I dont have any other info really to offer other than the make and model of the Laptop.

(note:-every now and then when there is a random act I get a loud beep which I assume is produced by ???)

tks

879015 2010-04-22 09:41:00 Hi Georgenz

You assume right. There are many ways to do this but here's the easiest. Just install free version of DRIVERMAX (www.innovative-sol.com). Follow it's simple instructions and you will have the most up to date drivers available for your audio devices in no time.

Then you can uninstall this program if you don't want to leave it on the computer.

Thanks mate that works well and it does show updated drivers but does not show me the driver that would be needed to get the sound card or on-board sound working.

879017 2010-04-23 00:55:00 It appears to have Intel High Definition Audio.

The driver should be available through Windows Update, I think.

879018 2010-04-23 03:13:00 Did you download this Audio (www.mytoshiba.co.nz) driver from Toshiba? bk T (215)
879019 2010-04-23 10:30:00 Thanks for the suggestions from all, tried both options with no luck. Will give up at this stage (for now) and maybe suggest they take the machine to Toshiba. georgenz (11379)
879020 2010-04-23 10:39:00 Have you checked the BIOS to see if Audio is enabled? Speedy Gonzales (78)
879021 2010-04-24 02:34:00 Ok dammed if I want this to beat me so back to it, with some more info and responses to suggestions and will try to resolve this systematically one way or the other.

1/ The machine was running XP (but has a Vista sticker on it) but when I tried to do a a clean install I came up with an error (can't remember what it was) but after some research I found out that to install XP I had to go into the BIOS and change the SATA Controller Mode to 'Compatibility' from AHCI and that doing this I was then able to proceed with the install - I dont know why but it works.

1a/ Speedy I cant see anything about sound in the BIOS settings

2/ Then I installed all the service packs and updates and found the drivers for the 'lan' and 'wireless' and got them working.

3/ No hibernation mode but remember Speedy's advice (previous machine) and downloaded and updated the video drivers

But no sound, and everything in Control panel / Sound is greyed out - so figured I just had to get the drivers and away we go but have had no luck no matter what I have downloaded and installed but happy to try again systematically.

Note:- when Windows open I get a loud beep and a WARNING "Cannot Access Volume Control!"

???? I did read somewhere which I cant find again that there may be a problem as the hardware/board etc?? are set up to work with Vista?? and so maybe I am pushing it uphill but I only have an XP disc with the machine and no idea what happened to Vista (the key on the bottom of the laptop is a Vista key as it does not work with XP)

879022 2010-04-24 02:44:00 The answer to your 1st question

The machine was running XP (but has a Vista sticker on it) but when I tried to do a a clean install I came up with an error (can't remember what it was) but after some research I found out that to install XP I had to go into the BIOS and change the SATA Controller Mode to 'Compatibility' from AHCI and that doing this I was then able to proceed with the install - I dont know why but it works.

The XP CD doesnt have SATA drivers on it (unless you slipstream them, or add them during the install with a floppy). Thats why you had to change it to compatibility mode. And why it wouldnt install (it wont find the hdd, if its SATA), if the CD doesnt have SATA drivers on it.. However Vista and Windows 7 DO have SATA drivers on the DVD. Which is why (if the hdd is SATA), Windows will install, whether AHCI or IDE mode / compatibility mode is enabled in the BIOS

879023 2010-04-24 02:48:00 Can you boot to a Linux live CD like Puppy and see if the sound works
with that? If not it is probably a hardware fault.
If you use Puppy to test it you can open hardinfo and click on summary,
under multimedia it should give the sound chip name as well.
