878967 2010-04-21 22:50:00 Hi Team

I'm still adjusting to XP, and every time I plug in or switch on an external USB storage device I get an annoying pop-up saying "This disk or device contains more than one type of content. What do you want Windows to do?"

It usually starts logging the disk contents and it can be hard to stop because it seems to restart in the time taken to click the various options. I guess this is some sort of automated data handling system for the semi brain-dead, but I just want to be left alone to get on with what I'm doing.

I haven't yet found any option to stop this 'service' and I don't know what it is called, but I sure as hell know what I'd call it.:annoyed:

Cheers

878968 2010-04-21 23:31:00 It's called AutoPlay. This page should help you to turn it off:

Unfortunately that doesn't bring up the same window on my computer (XP-Pro) so I assume it is for another version such as Vista or W7. It just shows the Windows components folder, not System. I'm logged on with admin rights etc.

I'll do a search through the help files now that I know what it is called.

878970 2010-04-22 00:30:00 Try one of these (support.microsoft.com) you may also have to install KB967715 for XP Speedy Gonzales (78)
878971 2010-04-22 00:48:00 To make things clear, this is what I see when I run gpedit and select admin templates. Digging deeper doesn't find anything either. It always surprises me (shouldn't by now) that the expected outcomes often don't appear on screen when by all accounts they should be front & centre!

Cheers

I've already installed the required KB967715 file.

How to use Group Policy settings to disable all Autorun features in Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, and Windows 2000

1. Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then click System.
3. In the Settings pane, right-click Turn off Autoplay, and then click Properties.

Note In Windows 2000, the policy setting is named Disable Autoplay.
4. Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
5. Click OK to close the Turn off Autoplay Properties dialog box.
6. Restart the computer.

878972 2010-04-22 01:14:00 See this page (www.windowssecrets.com) for the fix.

Note that the technique involves copying and pasting three lines of code into a NoAutoRun.reg file, then right-clicking the file, merging it into the Registry, and rebooting.

One of the lines of code is very long and looks as follows (it's all one line, but it word-wraps to two lines in small windows):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf

If you don't ensure that the code is on one line then the .reg file fix will not work.

Billy, this does work. I am using WinXP SP3, and it does take a bit of looking but you will find it! The instructions sent me on a wild goose chase first up.

The author's reference to Group Policy may have misled you, because there is a separate window for that which has nothing to do with anything - go:
Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> System. When you click on System, it opens a list of folders on the right screen, followed by a list of "whatever you call them". One of them is Turn off Autoplay. As far as I can work out, that is what you want to configure.

878976 2010-04-22 02:45:00 Sadly, been there, done that, identical result. In fact I'm sure that is where I was all along, except that I don't get a System folder to play with.

Second screen shot below from attempt #2.

What I don't understand is why I don't get the correct folders showing, including System. There must be another method to get access to that folder.

Cheers
