878601 2010-04-20 19:43:00 We are in possession of a shiny new VoIP router and have the phone plugged directly into it so running on VoIP. (its part of a package my step son won so its free) it's with Xnet so not the best speeds I the world regarding the broadband but its free.

Question does the line into the phone jack in the wall still need a filter since the phone no longer plugs into the jack?

878602 2010-04-20 20:31:00 Any phone or fax device plugged into the wall socket connected of your Telecom line needs a filter. Your broadband line should not have a filter, although you may be using the adaptor half of a splitter-filter to connect broadband. If your Xnet goes down then your VOIP phone goes down and there's temptation to plug phone back into Telecom - so maybe leave the filter there just in case. coldot (6847)

Don't worry about the filter. The VOIP box should do it all.

PS: Me too! Not so happy about slow xnet speeds (1Mb/s) but cheap data (if you can get it) and free (kind of almost) phone couldn't be better.

Thanks Bananamonkey, yes we don't have a phone line as such so plugging in a phone will do diddly squat, Xnet wouldn't be my first choice but since we are paying nothing at all for a year I'll hang in there and hopefully by then another company will be offering a similar service.

So do Slingshot. We are using Xnet VoIP - and yes, the download speeds are slow (just done a speed check that gave 1186kbps). The phone would be quite economical if it was not for the silly Commerce Commission ruling that Timaru is rural ($20 surcharge).

878607 2010-04-21 19:46:00 Thanks all, will stick with it until the free time is up next April and then revisit as I do find the speed in the evening sucks. After all it's worth around $1200 to keep it for now gary67 (56)
