2010-04-20 06:46:00 | Guys Im going to Aus for a month and there is a certain young cretin in the neighbourhood, who just happens to be getting released from gaol the day I leave. The security of my property therefore concerns me because this cretin had no compulsion to steal off his dying brother and his grandfather. So, with that background the question is this: Can I leave my computer, modem, webcam running so I can access it from Aus? :thanks

2010-04-20 07:04:00 | YEP! Download Team Viewer (www.teamviewer.com) - get the full version NOT the quick support. That way you can setup your own password. Note down the login number - remember the password, and from another PC you open Team Viewer ( full install) and connect the two. There is a program out thats free ( or so it says) that does the same sort of thing but Via a browser logmein (secure.logmein.com) -- either one will allow you to look at the desktop as if you are sitting in front of it. Edited: YAWCAM (http://www.yawcam.com/) has the option to motion detect and take pictures and send to a email - so if it were setup, the laptop on, if someone triggered the cam it will send a photo to the email you select.

2010-04-20 07:30:00 | Add to my post above: Can I leave my computer, modem, webcam running so I can access it from Aus thats actually two questions . 1. Access the PC remotely from anywhere 2. The web cam. The web cam-- This news story (www.stuff.co.nz) was linked in chat the other day -- I assume you want to do similar. If you wanted to look at the webcam OR on its own Via the PC thats fine, BUT if there is a remote desktop installed, in the event it got stolen, as long as the drive wasn't wiped, it would be activated from anywhere. Mind you some one may get a surprise if the mouse suddenly started moving about on its own.

2010-04-20 21:56:00 | "Motion" is the free stuff, but I've never used it. I've used Go1984 in the past personally with *great* success. I've got an uber old version that was bought for me back in the day. I used it when I went away on my Honeymoon, caught my family break into my place and "prank" me. Literally caught them in the act ... it was hilarious when one of my siblings said "No, I didn't change your DVD's around in between all the cases", and swore black & blue. I showed her the video footage, and she caved ... If you've got an iPhone / iTouch then use "Home Camera" from the App Store. I've used that, it's not quite as nice as Go1984, but truckloads cheaper.

2010-04-20 22:18:00 | Hi BM Yes to all your questions if you have Vitamin D (www.vitamindinc.com) installed. There is a so called Pro version, paid, for multiple cameras or a free version that controls one camera. This should be sufficient for your needs. In addition to your requirements what I like about Vitamin D is it just doesn't only detect movement, (can be a hassle at times - pets etc) but actually detects people. Anyway, check it out. Watch their on-line videos. Really is an amazing bit of software. BURNZEE

2010-04-21 00:58:00 | Hey thanks guys, all most interesting. Well I started at the top with Neds post and this Active Webcam seems to be exactly what I want. I have it up and running and it seems to work perfectly so far. The bit I like is it is Motion Sensitive (there should me nothing moving in the house) and sends an E-Mail or series of E-Mails, all time and Date stamped which I could forward to the Police. My only concern now is a break in the power supply which requires the computer and modem to be restarted. The programme can be set to start with Windows. Soooo, any recommendations as to no break power supplies or another way around this little problem? Im keen to try the active desktop and other similar programmes too, but Id better get this one as bullet proof as possible first. :)

2010-04-21 01:07:00 | Soooo, any recommendations as to no break power supplies or another way around this little problem? UPS power Supply, they come with surge protection, and a backup battery - so in the event of a power outage or dirty power, the battery kicks in and keeps the PC running till things establish back to normal again. Two things to remember, they are not meant to keep the PC running for a long time 20 -40 minutes depending on whats running ( power drain) - and the more / higher battery life you want the more $$ they will be.

2010-04-21 02:12:00 | Thanks Wainui, I guess that is the more conventional way, but I was thinking of something along the lines of a slugged relay that slapped an earth on the Power made good line until it operated itself and removed the earth. (back contact trick) Actually, whilst typing this it has occurred to me that the Modem will come on anyway once the power is restored. :) I guess that given these UPSs are only good for a short time and the computer wouldnt restore once the UPS went flat before the power was restored anyway, then they arent really an option in these circumstances. :illogical Improvise, thats the name of the game. ;) Any suggestions or improvements on the relay idea? :thanks
