796003 2009-07-28 19:54:00 Hi

In a months time I will be flying to Hong Kong for one week holiday. I have been looking forward to the holiday and ever since the decision was made I have been thinking shopping for IT gear and mobiles.

I have been searching some stores (fortress was recommended) online and to be honest the thought I had of making a saving on some cool gear has now faded. I am looking at buying some cool toys for the kids eg mini laptops and Wii also some mobiles for the wife and myself as well as some camera lenses but price comparisons done so far dont look that great.

Anyone know of some reputable places to shop in HK?

796004 2009-07-29 00:01:00 Although I haven't been to Hong Kong (and this doesn't specifically answer your question), I would highly recommend that you head along to the local night market. The night markets in Asia are always a very interesting experience, particularly since there's nothing which even remotely compares to them here in New Zealand. somebody (208)

796006 2009-07-29 03:01:00 You should go to RCMART and buy heaps of RC gear.

At least, That is what I would do.:banana

lol,, it's been so long since I've been to Hk although I still get stuff there since its 3x cheaper when it comes to getting mobiles.

There's a computer centre in a place called mongkok . It's a department store where you walk up the stairs and there's 2 floors of shops selling computers, laptops,Playstation,Wiis etc etc.

To my memory you catch the MTR train and stop at mongkok station. Look at the exit sign and go to exit C. You walk up from the station to the road and you see a bank on the right as you head up. Ignore the bank and cross the road and keep walking ahead.

I think after you cross the road and walk a bit further the store is located there on the left.

If you want to buy electronics such as mobiles,mp3 players etc then you would buy from a reputable store like citicall, Broadway, Fortress etc since they are the 3 big stores in hong kong you will unlikely to be cheated on when it comes to dodgy electronics.

Everything is in mongkok so you should have no problems when you get there after all Hong Kong is a pretty small place and with signs everywhere I doubt you will get lost.

If you do get lost just go back to the train station and follow the signs and start from there again.

There are other places but I think its safe for you to stay in mongkok.

Just remember that Hong Kong is alot more complicated to New Zealand. if you do mobiles make sure you buy from those stores so that the mobiles are from Nokia ,Sony Ericsson Hong Kong and not from a dodgy fake import.

Hong Kong do not have laws concerning to parallel goods . It is a risk you have to take if you decide to jump to a random store and buy stuff thats not from an official source.

Interesting as when I had a look at the Fortress website I worked out the prices were about the same as buying here in NZ . I suppose bargaining might be the key to the price saving .

Good information . A friend told me he would give me a couple hundred to buy him a 'flash' phone . I said at that price it will probably be a knock off - he said that's what he wants!

Just be wary when bringing goods back into the country - NZ Customs _may_ want to charge you GST for new goods brought back which exceed a certain "personal allowance" - I think it's around NZ$700. Although I have never heard of this happening to anyone, it is something to keep in mind. Edit: Info here www.customs.govt.nz

796011 2009-07-29 06:04:00 It depends where you buy and what you price but I feel anything you buy in ghong kong is cheaper than here even a NZ Plug Adaptor. They cost $0.50 cents. It's about $20 at dicksmith. I can have it sent from hong kong and save $1. I know a place in shum shui po that sells mobiles at good pricing but the problem is that they don't speak english so it'll be very hard to communicate thats unless I can ask my father to take you there.lol

If you give me a model of a mobile I can tell you the prices.

If you really unsure about something then you can PM me. We can talk about it

Be careful of your wallet and keep inside your pocket with a zip.

796012 2009-07-29 06:42:00 Typo. It depends where you buy the product and what your buying....

The exchange rate is very high. Do buy stuff there and make use of the exchange rate.lol
