795294 2009-07-26 04:51:00 The USA Federal minimum wage on Friday rose to $7.25 from $6.55 according to Reuters.

It makes our minimum wage look like a fat cats ! No wonder we can't compete anywhere !

But waiters who get tips their wage stays on $2.31 an hour !!

11.0552 NZD
United States Dollars New Zealand Dollars
1 USD = 1.52486 NZD 1 NZD = 0.655800 USD

:/ .... I suppose we are, then again we usually pay alot for the transport of the goods so all in all we probably end up equal.

P.S I used xe.com for my conversion

795298 2009-07-26 08:18:00 You think the US can compete anywhere? They made a trading pact with China - and don't forget NAFTA.

Their car manufacturers are going broke, their agriculture is propped up the government, they impose restrictions on imports and lock certain countries into "free trade" agreements which are anything but.

Even the beef jerky in our supermarkets is not made in the US....

Now tell us the cost of a weeks average groceries, the average power bill, the average phone bill, the average rent, etc .

I'll tell you petrol - which is an average of $2 . 50 a gallon .

Now who's the fat cats? You can't compare just on wages .

795300 2009-09-17 05:57:00 Hi PCtek

Point taken on petrol.
I would be keen to know some of the other items.
I suppose what you are saying is, that although their minimum wage is lower than ours, other things are cheaper.
You may be right, I know houses are much cheaper there.

So perhaps we should be asking our politicians and leaders why our houses are so dear and why our petrol is so dear ? and we all know that our power is well over priced.

Another question I have regarding country comparisons is the average wage. I am not interested in the official average wage as this is distorted by fat cats on $300,00 a year. I would be more interested in the wage for an average worker.

But who or what is an average worker ?
Say an office worker ? a warehouse man ? a bus driver ? a factory worker.

795301 2009-09-17 06:10:00 Right now my Social Security pay raise that's supposed to happen Jan 1st, isn't gonna happen.

It cannot go down by law, but it ain't gonna go up the "normal" half-percent or so.

So no relation to inflation then, why bother with 1/2%?
