2009-07-25 03:52:00 | We have an engagement party in Dunedin, towards the end of August and, so we would have the opportunity to see new country, thought we would drive rather than fly. How long would this take, can anyone please tell me?

2009-07-25 04:06:00 | Google maps says it will take 9 and a 1/2 hours, but as I have no experience on the time to travel between Picton and Dunedin, I cannot confirm if this is correct. | davidmmac (4619) | |

2009-07-25 04:25:00 | Using Garmin's Mapsource and the locally produced NZOGPS maps gives around 8 hours and 700 km, depending on settings chosen (prefer highways, fastest time). Assumes no stops, even for traffic lights! | seltsam (13470) | |
2009-07-25 04:28:00 | Two days. Take a break to enjoy Kaikoura, another, perhaps overnight, to check out a little of Christchurch, take a look at Timaru and enjoy the old buildings of Oamaru. I always think that its a wasted journey if you don't take in some of the places you're passing through. Welcome to paradise. | Scouse (83) | |

2009-07-25 05:49:00 | How long would this take, can anyone please tell me? How long is a piece of string, how long do you want to take? Personally, I always thought SH1 along the Kaikoura coast inspiring for the first time, but once you hit the Canterbury plains at Cheviot, it's boring as. I'd recommend go through Nelson, down the West Coast, and at Haast, inland to Lake Wanaka, Queenstown, then a bit of a dog leg route to Dunedin. Allow three days to do the tourist thing on the way. If you don't have the time for that Tiki Tour, I'd still go via Nelson, then through either Hamner Springs, or through Arthurs Pass. Whatever your choice, you'll see some amazing country, have a safe and enjoyable trip.
