795049 2009-07-27 15:21:00 Gene Krupa - few if any achieve his class.
Shelley Manne is also brilliant
Joe Morello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet
The drummer with Woody Herman in The Golden Wedding is also spectacular.

Are there any enthusiasts for small piano led Jazz groups , For that wonderful generation of Jazz pianists like George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, Andre Previn,Dudley Moore (a wonderful musician as well as a comic) to name a few.

795051 2009-07-27 21:01:00 I don't expect many who mentioned Gene Krupa will know he played with Bix Beiderbecke in 1930, near the end of Bix's incredibly short career when Bix was on the skids.............

795052 2009-10-18 09:41:00 Growing up I became a drummer because I loved Led Zeppelin and part of the reason for that was the creative drumming that gave the band their hard driving sound.

By the end of the seventies I was probably more a fan of Topper Headon and Paul Cook, but then if you weren't in those years then heaven knows where you went.

Haven't been as excited about drummers in recent years although still have the Ludwig drum kit sitting here in the garage.

Just been watching some YouTube live performances and have to say Matt Helders is going from strength to strength. Like Led Zeppelin were then, the Arctic Monkeys are currently on top of the pile for critical acclaim and judging by the fact they're doing a stadium tour, right now pretty much recognised as one of the top bands in the world. But like Zeppelin, you can't imagine the band being able to change drummers, it just wouldn't be the same as Helders is so central to the sound.

Helders is brilliant.

795053 2009-10-18 17:45:00 Animal from the muppets? Surely one of the best around. Mr Marshall of Marshall Amps watched a doco of him on a flight once he was a good drummer and advocated the brushing technique quite a lot

Still say this is the best :D:D

795054 2009-10-19 04:00:00 Animal from the muppets?

The 'drum battle' he did with Buddy Rich put it in perspective, no contest . Still have it on VHS !!

Buddy Rich
Mitch Mitchell
Keith Moon (only as no one drums like him, many tried)
Max Roach
Elvin Jones
Dave Weckl

How many Drummers actually changed the way drums were played, ie created a new style?? Not that many .
Joe Jones ?
Elvin Jones ?

795055 2009-10-20 03:52:00 Ringo Starr (Beatles)
Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins)
Dave Grohl (Nirvana)
Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle)
Nathan Followill (Kings Of Leon)

And this guy (www.youtube.com)

I agree re Jimmy Chamberlain. His drumrolls are so fast (at least on 'Gish') that my ears have trouble keeping up. Dunno about Ringo though. He is a squarefour drummer. Nice and tight but not really that much imagination.
