795086 2009-07-25 07:31:00 Hi jcr1. A further two-cents worth. When I lived in Wellington I would travel down the east coast. Now that I have livd twenty years near Nelson I can't remember when I last went down the east coast.
WalOne touches a series of trips near to my heart. I go south regularly and go either down the middle as suggested or down the West Coast.
Anyway - on a practical thought. If you take your car on the ferry, you have to be at the terminal at least one hour before sailing. Then you have more than three hours sailing. Add that to your initial travel time to Wellington (if any) and then Google's nine and a half hours - boy you'd be on your chinstrap long before you got to Dunedin. Enjoy.

Thats a good idea and walk at the other end, good for you.

Time is a limiting factor, as it's right in our "busy time". But I really would like to see the country south of Christchurch (Oamaru is one that interests me).

I know the top of the South fairly well as our son was sharemilking there for a few years and we'd travel down about twice a year, to; Havelock, then Karamea and finally to Kaikoura. We always had a fantastic time when we were down there, really liked it.

I don't really know the rest of the Sth. Island that well. Flown into Queenstown and Wanaka and toured around that area a bit, but that's about it.

795089 2009-07-25 09:45:00 Two days. Take a break to enjoy Kaikoura, another, perhaps overnight, to check out a little of Christchurch, take a look at Timaru and enjoy the old buildings of Oamaru. I always think that its a wasted journey if you don't take in some of the places you're passing through. Welcome to paradise.
Totally agree with that. Years ago went down to walk the Milford track with a couple of guys and we basically travelled from the Wairarapa straight down to the Milford track and back and I thought what a waste when the whole trip should have been done over about ten days.
