795929 2009-07-28 10:30:00 Hi there all,

I am thinking of switching from my Vodafone Broadband Plan to the latest Telecom "Big Time" Broadband Plan. :clap

At the moment, I get 30GB with Vodafone which cost me $90 a month and I get fast speed but unfortunately, I seem to always go over my limit to about 60GB's!!!

This Telecom Broadband Plan amazed me and I am considering changing but I read that at certain hours, broadband speed decreases which I do not like. The great thing about it is that it only cost around $60.

Is the speed that bad during certain hours of the day because I don't want to wake up at 2am just to maybe watch some YouTube Videos without buffering.

If it is possible for those already already on the plan or thinking of switching to Telecom, is it worth getting? Could you give me some reviews about it.

I found a review from stuff.co.nz but it would be great to get some helpful reviews from professionals.

Cheers Guys!!!

:thanks

795930 2009-07-28 10:41:00 I'd expect the worst. Even on other ISPs during peak while on a full speed up/down, in general I'd expect the net to be relatively slow. Peak times being when your speed is shaped, my guess would be to expect 128kbps.

All in all though, you could only guess until you are actually using it. BTW, you're missing a good few ISPs from your (irrelevant?) poll. I'm with Xnet and would call them average.

795931 2009-07-28 10:41:00 It's Telecom, so obviously everything they say is absolutely true, they will tell you of any tiny thing that may disrupt your holistically enhanced browsing experience and every whim of yours will be magically satisfied with nary a ripple on the sea of equanimity you are about to oh-so-pleasantly voyage upon.

Tui is good with that.

795932 2009-07-28 10:45:00 Chances are, even if the Big Time speeds are ok now, they will probably deteriorate as more people sign up for it. They clearly advertise that they _will_ traffic shape during peak hours, and therefore you should expect that the speeds won't be as reliable as what you have now.

Where in the country are you? If you're in Wellington (or parts of Christchurch with coverage), I highly recommend TelstraClear Cable. While the per-GB prices for data are a bit higher, speeds are stable more or less 24x7.

795933 2009-07-28 10:51:00 NO ISP can guarantee a consistent high speed all the time - if they do that's false advertising and impossible.

The speed will vary depending on the time of day, local traffic, and international traffic as well.

I'm with Telstra Cable, and my speeds are reasonably consistent. BUT please refer to the second statement above.

795934 2009-07-28 10:53:00 I'm from Auckland and I get good speed with Vodafone. What I don't like about Telstra Clear are the prices.

Sorry about the poll. Just put it there randomly. :-)

I've heard about XNET. They seem alright ISP's.

795935 2009-07-28 10:54:00 I'm on it, it doesn't seem to be THAT bad really, I'm completely satisfied. Here are a couple of speedtests.

www.speedtest.net - Christchurch
www.speedtest.net - Adelaide
www.speedtest.net - San Jose, CA
www.speedtest.net - Washington, DC
www.speedtest.net - Paris, France
www.speedtest.net - Malmo, Sweden
www.speedtest.net - Chatan, Okinawa, Japan
www.speedtest.net - Xiamen, China
www.speedtest.net - City of Singapore, Singapore
www.speedtest.net - Salto, Brazil

The speeds are great in NZ and Australia and pretty good elsewhere (With a few exceptions, China, Brazil)

Bittorrent speed? Doesn't seem any different to me, maybe even better. TBH, I don't really see Telecom as being that bad anymore.

795936 2009-07-28 10:56:00 Xnet  Ask some here about Xnet - used to be Ok, then they get more customers, and introduced the torrent plan, and it all turned to :sleep :yuck: wainuitech (129)

I'll be very curious to see how those results compare to tests in 3 or 6 months time. Hopefully Telecom increases capacity as they take on more customers, to keep performance levels up. If I recall correctly, the Go Large plan started out OK, and then went downhill quickly as subscriber numbers went up.

795938 2009-07-28 11:27:00 Well it helps that they aren't running a television campaign like last time "Get ready to unleash the internets!!!" Netsukeninja (13296)
