| 795153 | 2009-07-26 00:08:00 | From a local paper, and it may not exist too long: www.latimes.com I used to body surf here a lot in the '60s and '70s. The waves are over 10 feet (3 m) this week. |

| 795154 | 2009-07-26 00:34:00 | News Flash: The Newport Wedge (farm1.static.flickr.com) and HERE (www.thememyphone.com), is going off for a second straight day, with 15′ to 18′ (4.6m to 5.5m) waves, says Surfline. There have already been two rescues today by lifeguards, who are closely monitoring the area where a 50-year-old man died on Friday after getting slammed into the breakwater. There were only two surfers in the water just before noon, due to the sloppy conditions. Surf is down a bit in most other areas. Surfline forecasters estimate that waves are running 4′ to 7′ (1.2 m to 2.13 m) in most areas, but that waves have hit 8′ to 10′ (2.4 m to 3.0 m) at the Huntington Pier, where the US Open of Surfing is going on. An unidentified surfer leaped off the 30-foot (9.1 m) pier today into 10′ surf. Thanks for the storm, NZ - it makes my day to see the Wedge alive again! A storm from New Zealand pushed the biggest swell that So Cal has seen since the Spring of 2004. Trestles saw 10' + waves and The Wedge had faces around 15' - 20' (6.1 m). Today, the swell had slightly dropped, but was still able to pump out some remarkable waves!!! Great day to stay on shore and take advantage of the great photo opps. Some of these are archival pixs. |
