879742 2010-04-25 05:36:00 I have a 23 inch dell sp2309w (accessories.dell.com) with vga, dvi, and hdmi inputs. im using the dvi one for my pc, but was wondering if i can use the vga port to connect it to my ps2 with a vga to rca cord like this one (www.amazon.com). I can connect the audio ports to seperate speakers, the only thing i want is video to be displayed correctly on the monitor.. would this be possible? or would i have to buy a video signal converter? many articles suggest a converter, but i think this is only necessary if i run the ps2 through my pc, which i am not... i simply want to use the monitor as a tv screen. would the cable i plan on buying work for this purpose? h4rsheys (15319)
879743 2010-04-25 08:04:00 All I know of is it worked for a XBOX 360. Just a adapter like yours. Should work for PS2. dagangsta (14229)
879744 2010-04-25 17:52:00 ok thank you h4rsheys (15319)
879745 2010-04-25 22:16:00 I doubt that will work, and besides that adapter is designed for connecting your PC to your TV.

You need a converter, something like this: www.amazon.com

And no, the converter doesn't require a PC. What you are thinking of is a capture card.

879746 2010-04-26 00:33:00 actually agent_24, the adapter is made for streaming a video signal (rca or svideo) to a video-out vga port, NOT tv to pc - which is why it has so many low reviews on amazon - due to people making this slight error.

correct me if im wrong, but im pretty certain this adapter will function properly for a ps2 to monitor connection.

the converter is what is necessary for pc to tv connections, but i am not sure about this.

would a converter be neccesary for ps2 to monitor? i dont think so...

879747 2010-04-26 00:58:00 The cable you linked to is for connecting a PC\Laptop to a TV screen
The converter I linked to is for connecting a DVD player\PS2\etc to a PC monitor.

You must understand that S-Video and VGA use different types of video format, and the signals are different. Therefore to connect an S-Video signal to the VGA input of a computer monitor you need an actual video converter to change the video format like the one I linked to.

The cable you linked to has no conversion electronics - it assumes that your computer already has a function to support TV-out via the VGA connector (which most don't)

It has low reviews because people don't take the warning into account "CAUTION: Only works with VGA cards that have TV-Out functionality through the VGA connector."

It *may* work in the reverse sense IF the input is RGB Component video
(en.wikipedia.org)

However, reading this: Sync on Green (SoG) is the least common, and while some VGA monitors support it, most do not. Sony is a big proponent of SoG, and most of their monitors (and their PlayStation 2 video game console) use it. Like devices that use composite video or S-video, SoG devices require additional circuitry to remove the sync signal from the green line. A monitor that is not equipped to handle SoG will display an image with an extreme green tint, if any image at all, when given a SoG input.

So it might work if you're lucky... Personally I would get the converter.

879748 2010-04-26 15:58:00 hmm i suppose so...

i think i might still risk it, its only $4 after all.

if that doesnt work then i know the converter would be the way to go.

thanks agent_24.
