879657 2010-04-24 06:56:00 Hi

all looking at getting a new computer for a business, i want mid range with a graphics card, not a gamer but will be using photoshop

But i am baffled by the cpus, in the old days it used to be fairly easy to figure out what was the best, but I have no idea now
I assume everything these days is 64bit?
whats the difference between core 2 duo and dual core and phenom and quad core etc, (ok i realise quad means 4 core)

Would something like this be good

Everything else i look at seems to have integrated graphics, or have super dooper graphics cards, if you can suggest something i'm all ears my budget is around that price, i don't particularly want to go higher.

Any useful suggestions appreciated

Which are Intel. Phenom are AMD , and they're not interchangeable. Quad can mean Intel or AMD CPU 's. Again they're not interchangeable (you cant buy an AMD mobo and install an Intel Quad CPU on it) . More modern mobos support 64 bit CPU's. You can install a 32, or 64 bit OS, on it. However, if you install a 32 bit OS the limitation for ram applies

879659 2010-04-24 07:48:00 So how can you compare the speed of say an E7500 to say an i5? since they are so very different in architecture gary67 (56)
879660 2010-04-24 08:05:00 I suppose you could use benchmark programs to see what each one can do. And how fast they do it. Or if both are using 64 bit windows or something and 64 bit programs. You'll probably notice the diff Speedy Gonzales (78)
879661 2010-04-24 11:21:00 Saying you want to run photoshop doesn't really say enough. Editing 3MB JPEG's from your point and shoot or massive RAW files will tax a computer in different ways and require different hardware.

If it were me, I'd go for Intel. If you're not looking to spend a fortune then an i3 or i5 should be fine. I'm not sure how much you actually want to know about processors, but they're where the smart dollar sits as far as most users are concerned these days.

If you're only doing light gaming then an HD5750 should be enough. A 5770 does all I've asked of it, gaming wise at 1680*1050, so that could be a good option. I got mine for $255.

64bit doesn't seem to be an issue with modern OS's and most (probably ALL) CPU's are 64bit. It's the smart choice.

It all comes down to budget though. i5/i3 give you futureproofing, so may be cheaper in the long run. Core2 are cheap now but may well require an upgrade in the nearish future.

X6 AMD for under $400 :p

They still perform the same task. Ghz aren't to be entirely relied on as instructions per clock vary from architecture to architecture. Use of multiple cores/hyperthreading really depend on programs threading well, but can't hurt.

Generally better architecture, energy/heat efficiency and an integrated memory controller should speed things up a bit with new chips.

Speedy's right though. Benchmarks are good. Tomshardware provide a good variety of different hardware reliably benchmarked. Compare them there.

879664 2010-04-24 11:58:00 And if you install programs that support multicore CPU's, it'll probably speed things up a bit too Speedy Gonzales (78)
879665 2010-04-24 23:58:00 Just a side suggestion >>

Looking at the PC linked - If you get something like that - dont go paying for an "extra" warranty ITS A RIPOFF - the main components that are likely to fail, HDD OR motherboard, Graphic Card, all come with longer than 1 year warranties anyway.

HDD 3-5 Year

Mother Board - 3 Year.
Graphic Card - From Sapphires site
Sapphire VGA products carry a 2 year warranty

879666 2010-04-25 03:13:00 Core i3, basic. Coe i5, mid-range, Core i7 - delicious and high end but for the finacially able only.

Graphics 5770 would do, you don't need much if not gaming.......
