Most people I've seen seem to drink like pigs until they fall over. Who goes to "Have a few quiets" at 2 in the morning anyway? In my travels Norway was the worst place I struck for alchies and yet a country like France or Italy where drinking happened throughout the day did not show problems. I don't tend to go to the pub at night until about eleven as nothing much happens before then. The young today have it wrong as they drink like fish at home and the head to the pub at midnight rather than as we did it where we went to the pub and then found a party to get truly pissed. |

I don't tend to go to the pub at night until about eleven as nothing much happens before then . The young today have it wrong as they drink like fish at home and the head to the pub at midnight rather than as we did it where we went to the pub and then found a party to get truly pissed . In my student days, haven't really went to a pub now since my 2nd year at uni which is about 8yrs ago . People (and myself) drank because they want to get drunk, not cos they enjoy it or it taste good or they want to have a good occasion with people . They buy liqour in supermarkets because it is cheap so they buy beer and wine and spirits and may even mix it together, they even dig a hole in the beer can and suck it out as quick as possible and shaking ones head . They get high at home then they go to the pubs and nightclubs so they save money and get drunk . If you are not high you haven't done your job . You haven't met your goal . As a regular timetable people couldn't wait to get drunk Thursday, Friday and Saturday night . Sunday night was to do study or to get sober and get ready for the work week . Some would argue that weekdays you study, Saturday with mates and Sunday with your partner . In fact at uni in my days they said during exam times, if you take your textbooks to a pub you get a special deal . I haven't worked in a bar, would like to know from others is it hard to tell a person is drunk to determine if you are going to serve a drink to them? IMO I would think that 2am is not that great and I have undecided with raising the drinking age . In a way I think if you are going to have nightclubs this is a issue we are gonna have . |

Difference is I dont fight, drive or vandalize stuff when I am pissed Agree and disagree, if your going to drink, then get smashed . But I often (most nights) will have 2-4 drinks after work just to calm myself down for the night I haven't worked in a bar, would like to know from others is it hard to tell a person is drunk to determine if you are going to serve a drink to them? As far as I can tell it isnt regulated, I've been served in stupid states, hell at the Speights Ale house here in chch ive pissed on myself while tryin to put the myself away and then been served straight after . As long as you arent causing trouble who cares how much you drink . All they need to do is up the punishments for disorderly conduct while under the influence and people would stay at home and fight rather than in the most public place they can find . |

From what I have seen that doesn't work as a young lad I flatted with in Napier while I worked on his house used to spend more money than I did even though he did most of his drinking at home. Used to do about $120 between midnight and 3am. |

Used to do about $120 between midnight and 3am. I am talking about student flats ie., in my case Dunedin. Student flats are in walking distance to the pubs and city. People eat their dinner and get drunk at home then when it is 12am they start going to the pubs and nightclubs. In a public scene you can have music, dance and place to socialise be it those you know or those you do not know that you wanna meet up with ..... |

If a drinker wants drink he would run over broken glass with bare feet to get it. I am not going to drink more because a liquor store opens up next to my house when before I had to drive 10 minutes to a store. When I was growing up in Mot the Swan, Hotel Mot, Post Office, Riwaka, Travellers rest, Upper Moutere and Manoys wouldnt serve us 15 years old. What did we do? Drive over the Takaka hill to the rat trap to get some crates of DB, they served anyone with money and a heart beat. |

In fact, making drugs illegal doesn't work either, indeed countries that tolerate use of drugs like cannabis, have fewer problems and less usage than ones that don't . So go ahead, raise the age, reduce the opening hours, and whatever other restrictions you can think of, and the net effect will be either nothing will change . or quite possibly things will get worse . Allow bars to open when they want, allow anyone in a bar of any age, make all drugs legal and stop trying to "help" people by locking them up for their own good (unless of course they commit some other sort of crime) . There - that should get you wowsers going . |

| 796723 | 2009-08-01 09:40:00 | I think young people today are just more clever than the previous generation. When you think about it pissing up at home on cheap piss in the evening then going out around midnight is good idea. Only need a few expensive drinks to keep the intoxication level up. Nothing much has changed except the last generation of binge drinkers became old boring buggers married, with mortgages and worried about the property market. They resent the fact the young people are having fun and they cant because they are old I think its absolutely despicable to make laws that impinge on responsible drinkers. By responsible I mean pissed as a chook, happy drunk. No fighting, wrecking things, driving. |

They then went out and drank flagons at parties until the same hour of the night they do now . So all that changed was they tend to be on licensed premises later now - quite possibly a good thing . You might find this incredibly hard to believe, but some old buggers have fun as well . |
