| 879775 | 2010-04-26 08:42:00 | Budget isn't a huge issue . Price / performance sweet spot isn't an overarching consideration . RAM will be at least 4gig . Drives aren't an issue . Quietness is . If I have to purchase a new cooler, I will . Ok, time for a summary: Don't waste your moola on a i7 screamer and the latest high end board you silly old coot . Quad core i5 seems to be where it's at, although comparable priced AMD quads cores will perform roughly on a par (is that right?) . I ask too many questions . Is that about it? It's an either or, or does Intel have a definite advantage . What about the Intel chipsets, are they still lagging a bit behind the ATIs, AMDs and Nvidia's? |

There is not a lot in chipsets these days, id look at this , great board good value, Sata 3, USB3, nice overclocker if you ever felt the urge. www.computerlounge.co.nz Flat out get the 750, its a better performer than I5 Clarkdale models and enthusiasts see it as the current sweet spot in I5 www.computerlounge.co.nz Shop around |

You could have a pull/push arrangement with two low RPM, high CFM 140mm fans. Might be quiet. Will definitely be safe. 1156 isn't a future-proof platform. Next year they're releasing new chips on an 1155 platform. I'm with PCTek though. There's no such thing as future proof. Personally, I'd go i5 and buy completely new Mobo/CPU in two or three years time when you've decided you need more. |

| 879778 | 2010-04-27 09:04:00 | Cheers everybody . I'm humbled . It all looks like good sensible advice all round and not one s***fight (gawd, this place has gone to the dogs ;) ) . That Gigabyte board sure looks purdy, too, and doesn't have any little buzzy bee fans either, which gives me hope for current wattage = heat = cooling = Oh and, the i5 750 doesn't have any of that "Intel® Trusted Execution Technology", which to my mind, seeing as it looks like marketing speak for 'screw you mother f***er, what's yours is ours', has to be a good thing . Golly Gosh! The realisation has just hit me, after all these years, I'm going to be a a baby eating Intel Fanboy apologist for naked commercialised aggression and mercantile expediency . Tully will be pleased . :p Does he still post? |

| 879779 | 2010-04-28 03:38:00 | for any computer product there is a point on the curve of price vs performance where the value is greatest. i7 is past that point, so the extra performance/expense would have to be justified. AMD appears to give 2/3 the performance for 1/2 the price. I bought amd x2 3.0, very quiet. My cheap PSU fan is louder. Ubuntu shows the CPU freq scaling, idling at 800mhz 97% of the time. |

I7 Overclocks extremely well and the resulting performance is way beyond that of a "similar" O/C PhenomII . Price/performance becomes very blurry here as the performance gap keeps increasing with equivalent clock rates. Also some people don't see maybe $300 difference between a PhenomII and I7 rig as much money and have a good use for I7, where others may consider that a lot of money and wouldn't have a use for the extra grunt anyway. Its a personnel decision much like buying a car 4 cylinder vs a v6. |

Of course it's got to be a reasonable ship in the first place, otherwise you just look like a complete and utter fool . I was kind of leaning towards that category of fool myself, but was rescued just in time by the good advice submitted here . Damn it! |

| 879782 | 2010-04-29 22:24:00 | AMD ! Go wash your mouth out. Asus Rampage 1366 i7 CPU. O/clocked to 4.2 Windows 7 64 bit I have been useing these for six months with zero problems and haven't had to do a reinstall yet. Amazing for me! And get a 285 vid card and you'll be set for a few years. |

If you have the dosh, get an SSD to go with it, even if a little one just for the o/s and programs and put data on a big spindle extra drive, you wont reqret it! |
