If I have to purchase a new cooler, I will . Ok, time for a summary: Don't waste your moola on a i7 screamer and the latest high end board you silly old coot . Quad core i5 seems to be where it's at, although comparable priced AMD quads cores will perform roughly on a par (is that right?) . I ask too many questions . Is that about it? It's an either or, or does Intel have a definite advantage . What about the Intel chipsets, are they still lagging a bit behind the ATIs, AMDs and Nvidia's?	Murray P (44)
879776	2010-04-26 09:28:00	The I5 stock fan is fairly low speed and quiet, not to mention most if not all i5 boards have fan control, your case fans are the bigger concern. 879777	2010-04-26 11:15:00	You might possibly be able to go passive on i5 with a megahalems cooler... but don't blame me if it starts blowing smoke. I certainly wouldn't do it. You could have a pull/push arrangement with two low RPM, high CFM 140mm fans. Might be quiet. Will definitely be safe. 1156 isn't a future-proof platform. Next year they're releasing new chips on an 1155 platform. I'm with PCTek though. There's no such thing as future proof. Personally, I'd go i5 and buy completely new Mobo/CPU in two or three years time when you've decided you need more.	Thebananamonkey (7741)

That Gigabyte board sure looks purdy, too, and doesn't have any little buzzy bee fans either, which gives me hope for current wattage = heat = cooling = :thumbs: Oh and, the i5 750 doesn't have any of that "Intel® Trusted Execution Technology", which to my mind, seeing as it looks like marketing speak for 'screw you mother f***er, what's yours is ours', has to be a good thing . Golly Gosh! The realisation has just hit me, after all these years, I'm going to be a a baby eating Intel Fanboy apologist for naked commercialised aggression and mercantile expediency . AMD appears to give 2/3 the performance for 1/2 the price. I bought amd x2 3.0, very quiet. My cheap PSU fan is louder. Ubuntu shows the CPU freq scaling, idling at 800mhz 97% of the time.	pkm (13527)

I7 Overclocks extremely well and the resulting performance is way beyond that of a "similar" O/C PhenomII . Price/performance becomes very blurry here as the performance gap keeps increasing with equivalent clock rates. Also some people don't see maybe $300 difference between a PhenomII and I7 rig as much money and have a good use for I7, where others may consider that a lot of money and wouldn't have a use for the extra grunt anyway. O/clocked to 4.2 Windows 7 64 bit I have been useing these for six months with zero problems and haven't had to do a reinstall yet. Amazing for me!
