2009-08-01 07:16:00 | It's a disgrace. Just because the law says it's OK for them to have personal trips and what not on us, doesn't make the whole thing moral. Imagine, they're already on six-figure jobs; more than three times the average wage here. Sure, their jobs can be hard and stressful; but so are so many other average people whose source of income are far more vulnerable in times like these. If I was an MP I would never let the taxpayers pay for personal expenses, eg holidays underwear etc.

2009-08-01 08:12:00 | And there were those who thought Labour were bad and blindly voted in the Key cohorts thinking things would change, who were they trying to kid? | gary67 (56) | |
2009-08-01 08:32:00 | Its trivial. If taxpayers were asked, MPs would be paid nothing. But we'd still expect them to work. A far bigger issue is the social welfare budget for NZ - $16 billion per year. Its beyond what we can afford. The head leads, The body follows. I don't consider it trivial in the slightest.

2009-08-01 08:50:00 | If you're running a country and were voted in to do so, you should be paid a good salary, certainly six figures. The politicians vote themselves these perks because people whinge about them getting paid what you should be paid to run the country. Cut out all these perks, and pay them what a commercial manager with similar responsibility gets paid. Of course, then there will be lots of complaints that the current system is cheaper. Maybe we could have citizens postal voting as an alternative, at ten million or so per vote.

2009-08-01 09:19:00 | :groan: Lets start by halving the number of politicians, and then start cutting back on the expenses of those that remain. Better still, get rid of the whole bunch of politicians in the beehive and just hire consultants to run the show. It will be much cheaper. After all, they are hiring consultants to do the works, anyway.

He thought he was entitled to a lot more....... I think those running countries should be paid the average wage. And get nothing when they leave. Puts them more in touch with the realities. And would stop the desire for power....... |
