880792 2010-04-28 21:07:00 What is the best way to convert a DVD film from PAL (NZ TV) to NTSC (USA TV)? The film is home made and not copyright protected. I want to send it to a friend in the States.

The only way I know is to use the freeware SUPER video encoder to convert the VOB files to MPEG, then to convert the MPEG to NTSC using a video editor that I have (ULead VideoStudio). Does SUPER convert direct from PAL to NTSC, or is there another simple way?

880793 2010-04-28 21:30:00 A lot of Stateside based video players (the newer ones, anyway) play both NTSC and PAL.

Have you asked your friend if their player will play both formats?

880794 2010-04-28 21:58:00 I take you have used DVD Flick for producing DVD's? .I see there is a option for NTSC in the project settings menu, should work okay as you will have a AVI file from camera.

When done check with DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink as it will comfirm it's NTSC in the info it will provide

880795 2010-04-29 00:32:00 You should not need to convert the .vob files, just rename them to .mpg (because that's what they are) and then re-encode to NTSC. KarameaDave (15222)

Have sent an email so will see. I had assumed USA dvd players would all be NTSC as it is typical for Americans to disregard the rest of the world e.g. the metric system. :groan:

No, not DVD Flick. In my first post I state the software that I use; it does have the option of NTSC or PAL for the final output file.

You should not need to convert the .vob files, just rename them to .mpg (because that's what they are) and then re-encode to NTSC.

Is it really that simple? Would the entire movie (about an hour) still be in the correct sequence? It is easy enough to try so I will see what happens.

880797 2010-04-29 22:42:00 Converting to NTSC is an "interesting" process since you have to change the dimensions of the picture to 720x480 & change the framerate from ~25fps to ~30fps while keeping the audio in sync.

I'm sure there are tools to make the conversion relatively painless, check the forums at Doom9 (forum.doom9.org/) and VideoHelp (http:).

Hopefully your Stateside friends have a dual format player & can handle the PAL DVD ok :D

880798 2010-04-29 22:46:00 If you've still got the original and use Vista, load it through there (Movie Maker, if it can load the format), edit it then change it to NTSC then burn it Speedy Gonzales (78)

Methinks that is not quite as simple as you make it sound :(

Are you 100% sure of your facts?

It works! :)

But I am not sure about the sequence of the whole movie. I only tried one VOB. Will try the entire flick later.

Yes I am, I've done it several times.
It's always worked for me.
