880635 2010-04-28 02:52:00 Do you KNOW who sent it? You may need one of these (file-extension.net). I have no idea what these do. It looks like its a vector image file. Or some kind of payroll software file Speedy Gonzales (78)

I googled it but got more confused by the info' available. The description of the file is:
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document
I would have thought that MS Word would open it. Perhaps my 2003 version is too old.?

880637 2010-04-28 03:18:00 The link I posted is what opens them. Office isnt one of them. I think this is one of the programs (www.type3.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
880638 2010-04-28 03:26:00 The description of the file reads "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document"
I thought I should be able to open it with MS Word but perhaps my 2003 version is too old.?

880639 2010-04-28 03:32:00 Well obviously it doesnt open them. Because it doesnt work. Ask whoever sent it what program created it. Unless Office 2010 created it Speedy Gonzales (78)
880640 2010-04-28 03:32:00 ...I thought I should be able to open it with MS Word but perhaps my 2003 version is too old.?That's correct - that file should open with MS Word 2007 or higher, or you should be able to open it in MS Word 2003 if you install the compatibility add-on.

OpenOffice may be able to read it if you have a recent version, but the formatting may be a bit messed up - it's not too good at reading OOXML documents yet.

Finally, it looks like the file may have the wrong extension - files of that type should generally have a .docx or .docm extension.

Do you know what the file is supposed to contain?

...Office isnt one of them.Office *is* what opens it, provided the OP has given us the correct mimetype (which they probably have). Mimetypes are usually a more reliable way of telling what a file is than the filename extension.

It looks like I will have to upgrade my old MS 2003 version to a later edition.
I am always keen to learn about these things and it is nice to get help such as yours. Cheers.

880643 2010-04-28 05:43:00 You might not need to upgrade. Try this: office.microsoft.com Chilling_Silence (9)
