798947 2009-08-06 22:51:00 Finally solved the longest annoying problem on my computer.
Took 1.5 years to figure out and fix!

Was going to resurrect my old thread but it's locked:

Turns out the CMOS battery was dead. The computer wouldn't boot up without a CMOS battery, or a flat battery. From multimeter reading the battery reads 2.47V which is far too low for it to work properly.

I guess the battery was just not enough for booting sometimes which gave the error, and sometimes it somehow went through, so the problem comes and go randomly...

Thought I'll post my findings here... for anyone who might need it~ :)

798948 2009-08-06 22:54:00 I remember looking at that thread, glad to hear you got it sorted.

I'm having problems at the moment with a laptop and a flat CMOS battery. It's an old dell, and the battery is comprised of 6 1.2v miniature watch-type batteries, all connected together to make a 7.2v battery, and then it's connected to the motherboard via a weird looking cable...putting out 1.65v.

Be thankful for the normal CR2032 batteries! :D

798950 2009-08-07 00:14:00 I've had this problem years ago and found it dead easy on that computer (a Commodore - remember them?), but recently was puzzled by a complete failure of my laptop to run on its battery.
A local expert told me it was the battery that was down - but there had been no warning at all. No sign of the slightest little bit of life after an all night charge.
He ordered a new battery for me - no need to pay if it wasn't the battery.
Of course he was right - the new battery worked fine from the first moment without even being given a charge up.
I was a bit surprised to find a battery could go down so very completely just like that.
