798533 2009-08-05 19:49:00 If I were, to say - put a notebook-type OS on a desktop PC, would it actually run? SurferJoe46 (51)
798534 2009-08-05 19:50:00 Don't see why not so long as you can get drivers for that OS for the hardware gary67 (56)
798535 2009-08-05 20:42:00 I was also wondering about this:

. . . . . . just when some Linux distributions seemed to be gaining a foothold, Google may soon curtail their success . The strength of its brand, and its reputation as a company that builds sleek and easy-to-use products, means it could steamroll over the other Linux candidates, says Joshua Martin, senior analyst at the Yankee Group .

Consumers will be drawn to a brand they recognize and that they associate with efficient online services, rather than to lesser-known names like Ubuntu and Moblin, Martin said . Google's reputation for creating popular online services may also encourage PC makers to adopt the OS in netbooks, he says .

Other Linux distributions still haven't been widely successful in netbooks, setting the bar low for Google's Chrome OS to succeed, says Al Gillen, program vice president at IDC .

"With consumers, who are less likely to be concerned about track record and commercial support, Google Chrome OS could do better than other distros," Gillen says .

I'm just trying to get a leg-up on my next purchase: a notebook . I figger to use Ubuntu to get it online and then just get GoogleOS and run from there .

Will I be able to use the GoogleOS offline? Maybe I answered my own question .

If not (and it's prolly very likely so) I'll try to get another L-based Ubuntu running as the resident OS for my note-taking in classes .

L and me don't seem to get along too well . :badpc:

798536 2009-08-05 23:10:00 Ubuntu is not really Linux, it is a strange thing that is common (but not popular) around the place.
Rather like Windows, it is hard to tell if it is faulty, or just made that way.
More like a stop-gap piece of frippery for dilettantes. (That should get the Ubuntu eggs out of the woodwork) ;)
