881464	2010-05-01 06:20:00	Hi all Occasionally my PC runs quite sluggishly. It's not all the time, but enough to be annoying... so this weekend my mission is to try and find and fix it. This is where I need your help Firstly my specs: CPU: i7 860 RAM: 6GB RAM Corsair DDR3 3x2GB MB: Asus P7P55D PRO GPU: ATI Radeon HD4890 HD: internal 1) WD Caviar Black 1GB (Wd1001FALS-00j7b0) (for OS and apps) installed as drive C : internal 2) WD Caviar Green 1.5TB (wd1001FALS-00jlb0) (for Data) installed as drive D : OS: Win 7 Home Premium 64bit Secondly the symptoms: Sometimes when accessing data from D: drive there is some stuttering. Even in basic MP3 playback. Also when saving data to D drive, again sometimes it seems to be quite slow, but not always. Example - yesterday I was saving my Outlook data file to D: drive as a backup. I noticed initially, the transfer speed was 826KB/second which seemed hellishly slow (and it said it was going to take 16minutes to save the 778MB file). After a few minutes, the progress bar and data speed sped up. Screenshot attached. www.imagef1.net.nz Other examples are when using email and changing between folders, sometimes it can take 10-20 seconds before the new folder shows with the emails. Playing videos can often stutter, but not continuously. Even sometimes web browsing can be slow, but I put this down to internet congestion rather than my PC, unless it is something to do with temp files being written/accessed from D: drive too. Occasionally too my keyboard will have some keys stop responding, but this is fixed when I unplug and reconnect the USB plugs for it. Mentioning this just in case, but I'm sure this is an unrelated issue Thirdly my thoughts on what it might be: All the above leads me to think there is some kind of bottleneck between moving data between C and D drives. Both drives are internal SATA drives. Originally I was running Win 7 64bit RC, and when the final version came out I did a clean install. I was reading somewhere that if you do this, then the SATA controller would default as IDE emulation mode, rather than AHCI mode, and it's very difficult to change it back. Is this true and would that perhaps account for the erratic performance? Is there anyway to change that setting back to ACHI? If I change it through the BIOS I get a BSOD. Which upon Googling it, seems to be common because it doesn't have the right drivers for ACHI available. Is there any other settings, perhaps relating to BIOS, or caching, or page files etc that I may have missed that I should re-check?? Fourthly what else I have checked: Have made sure my BIOS and all other drivers are up to date, which they are as far as I know. Am up to date with all MS security patches Have run full viruschecks and trojan checks, all clean Run Avira AV (only one AV), and Comodo firewall, a combo I've used for years in the past, so I doubt very much they would be caused the slowdowns Have defragged and error checked the drives I haven't yet tried another cable but that's next on the list..but hoping there is a software or setting that will fix it, rather than hardware Oh also here is a Hijack this log. 881465	2010-05-01 07:06:00	Was AHCI enabled in the BIOS, when you installed Win7?? Did you install / update the chipset drivers, after installing Win7?? 881466	2010-05-01 07:33:00	Hi Speedy Thanks for the response, I'll fix those startup entries. I didn't change anything in the BIOS when I did the reinstall, so I'm not sure if it's enabled by default, or not. When I try to change it now, that's when it gives the the blue screen as soon as it starts. If I change it back to the old value in the BIOS, then it starts okay (but of course is running in IDE emulation mode) As far as the chipset drivers, I thought I installed them after installing Win 7. I remember going to the Asus site after the install, and getting everything I thought I needed. I've just gone to the site again, and downloaded/reinstalled again This: Description Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility V9.1.1.1020 for Windows 32/64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7.(WHQL) From: support.asus.com After unzipping and running, it said sucessfully installed. So I don't know if that means it was never installed correctly to start with, or if it's just again reinstalled over the top. What do I need to do now - do I need to do anything with the drivers via Device Manager? Should I now try going back into BIOS and changing it back to ACHI again?? Yep, I have the latest BIOS 1408 at the moment. I didn't change any settings in the BIOS after I updated the BIOD, I never have after updating the BIOS in the past either. Should I have reset them and then changed them each time? When a BIOS is updated, does it remember any of the old settings?? No, I'm not running any USB3 devices that I'm aware of. I don't think this board is USB3 capable. Nope, I'm not running RAID. Should I uninstall that xInsIDE.exe file?? Perhaps that's causing a conflict somewhere?? What should my next steps be?? 881467	2010-05-01 07:51:00	Use ccleaner and disable this entry, just in case it stuffs something up O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [JMB36X IDE Setup] C:\Windows\RaidTool\xInsIDE.exe If it was on IDE emulation when you installed Windows, as you found out, you cant change it to AHCI (after Windows has been installed). Or it'll crash (because the SATA drivers havent been installed). If you want AHCI, you'll have to enable AHCI in the BIOS first. Then format the hdd again. Then reinstall Windows. I think there's some kind of registry hack, but unless you know what youre doing, you may kill windows altogether You could be right, I dont think the mobo supports USB3. Why the latest BIOS says Improve compatibility with some USB3.0 devices, I have no idea. You should set the BIOS back to its default settings, then configure the settings after you flash it. Because it may have new features. Even with a new mobo, you should configure the settings. Or else it may not work properly	Speedy Gonzales (78)

881469	2010-05-01 08:49:00	If you update a BIOS it remembers nothing of what you had before so you have to go through and make your choices and then save same. Quite possible that the BIOS may be set to boot off a floppy as first choice and there is no floppy drive installed.	Sweep (90)
881470	2010-05-01 09:20:00	Hmmm... well I googled some more and found some instructions for enabling AHCI after an installation for example www.ithinkdiff.com Even though that was for a Win 7 C version, it looks like the reg key is the same, so I tried the same option (changing value back to 0), and then rebooting and enabling AHCI in BIOS before rebooting. Everything seemed to work, it installed, resrated and now it seems as if I'm in AHCI mode. I now have the safely remove hardware icon in the tray for both C : and D : drives is this normal! But the main problem now is, it seems even slower! Copying my Outlook backup file this time seemed to give an avergae speed of about 1.5 / 1.6MB/sec only!! Is there a setting somewhere I have missed, or not set correctly??	Chikara (5139)

I'm not too sure if AHCI, or the chipset drivers do that. Because, when I updated the chipset drives, the options changed to something else. Have you installed ALL of the updates? Did you reset the BIOS and reconfigure the BIOS. If you havent, I would. Then save them then reboot.	Speedy Gonzales (78)

These are the relevant settings and what the values are set to now, hope this is correct: Storage configuration: Configure SATA as AHCI (other available options were IDE or RAID) AHCI configuration: Port 1 HD; Port 2 HD, Port 3 CD Drive (these values seem to ahve been auto selected) Onboard device configuration: J-Micron eSata/Pata controller: AHCI mode As far as I know, all the updates are installed. But I might go to the Asus site again and download/install the most recent available ones. Where in Control Panel/Device manager should I be looking? I'm not sure which devices correspond to what drivers I need to check/update...	Chikara (5139)
