799842 2009-08-09 20:47:00 My SWMBO will be replacing her lappie at school October this year. She teaches TIM and InDesign, and wanted a Mac but she's not willng to pay the extra dosh that the school wants her to pay (Mac's are a bit dearer). So she asked me and I thought I would ask the lads in this forum.

If she goes for a non-Mac lappie, I told her to go for max RAM - because of the graphics resource hogging programs she will be running. Brandwise, if I look at the recommendations on previous posts, it would seem as if the Asus, Toshiba, Dell (in that order) seems to be the suggested brands and the definite no-no's Acer, HP?

I've got no idea of the price range she can go for.

Any other suggestions? She's currently running a Toshiba with 1G RAM (got no idea of chip speed) - all I know it's a slow as mud.

What's the rate limiting step here? The graphics or the memory?

Cheers :)

799844 2009-08-09 22:20:00 Yup, Ram is limiting but it's also their Techies - it had to be repaired a few times the last few months and every time it comes back slower with more problems. I'm not allowed to touch it after I b*ggered it a year or so ago. I don't think it's got a seperate graphics card tho'.

To put it bluntly, she inherited this lappie from the previous HOD and it was b*ggered then. Still b*ggered. With the new one at least I can ensure she gets what she needs.

799845 2009-08-09 23:06:00 I'd say the limiting factor is the CPU too....I'm guessing its either a celeron or a pentium M..

799847 2009-08-10 12:53:00 Buying Electronic stuff for SWMBO's is fraught with peril; either you are a spendthrift wastrel big noting it with unnecessarily flashy equipment, or a a parsimonious prat foisting off a piece of unfashionable junk on her. The colour will be wrong no matter what you do. Give her the credit card, send her off to shop, and resign yourself to being unwilling to take any decisions or assist in the simplest tasks.
Possibly a strategically placed box of chocolates ready for her return will help.
Well, maybe it won't be quite that bad, but be absent when she returns just in case. You cannot win, so strive to minimise the harm. ;)

I've dealt with them twice-service is not best, but they are nice people and respect RMAs

799849 2009-08-10 20:41:00 Will she not be getting a laptop through the MOE TELA (www.minedu.govt.nz) scheme?

Current HP (h50025.www5.hp.com) and Toshiba (www.toshiba.co.nz) laptops for teachers.

799850 2009-08-11 02:42:00 Don't know Stormdragon (I think so, but she pays everything herself, she just get it a bit cheaper). Because of the subject she teaches she got "approval" to go for a better product than what they want her to get.

Add 2GB RAM to something like that....that's very similar to what the schools are currently getting on the TELA scheme.
