799022 2009-08-07 04:45:00 John S. Barry, an executive who masterminded the spread of WD-40, the petroleum-based lubricant and protectant created for the space program, into millions of American and worldwide households, died on July 3 2009 in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego. He was 84.

799024 2009-08-07 05:17:00 What a man. WD-40 is great stuff. I wonder if he came up with anything else. Interesting that it is petroleum based, no doubt that is why it is so good at removing tar (bitumen) from cars and the like.

It's a shame that we all grow old and then die, me !!! not too far away.

He didn't come up with WD-40 he was just the guy who marketed it and did a bloody good job, it was invented about 15 years before he came to the company.

The Guy who invented it was Norm Larsen (en.wikipedia.org), who also had a hand in the creation of CRC 5.56

799027 2009-08-07 09:03:00 Is there much practical difference between wd40 and crc?
I tried a quick google but found nothing.

799028 2009-08-07 09:10:00 A locksmith told me you can use WD-40 on lock mechanisms, but not CRC, which will gum up the lock mechanism. Sick Puppy (6959)

You shouldn't use either for that you should use dry graphite as it doesn't collect crap like liquid lubricants do

CRC only came later, a pale and innefectual copy of the real thing (powered by marketing).
