801622 2009-08-16 08:32:00 Just for fun I ran a CD through my WMP10 and at the same time, saved it to Audacity.

It's an old song from the '50s, 'way before DRMs and stuff.

I had a downloaded version (paid-for) of the same music cut and ran it also through Audacity.

I time-matched them and they are the same length but the downloaded version has a lot of extra little - how can I say it? - "bumps and flats" in the histogram.

I can scroll through both versions at the same time and mostly they are pretty identical - but there's some "extra" stuff that I believe is DRM or codec-added stuff.

I opened the time factor and can see just 0:00:001 seconds on a full screen and there's "something" there alright! Whatever it is - is very small. Morse code maybe? The timing is all over the boards though. Not sequential in the slightest that I can see.

Is this where they are? Any thoughts?

801623 2009-08-17 07:51:00 I tried this, but unfortunately I can't read music. ;) R2x1 (4628)
801624 2009-08-17 08:56:00 It could be an audio 'fingerprint'. A while ago I read up on something like this, it was meant so that data could be tracked, for things like tracking down pirates, etc. ubergeek85 (131)
801625 2009-08-17 10:30:00 if they could get away from this wimpy DRM, the pirates would lose their arm when they grasped the pirated explosive media. I look forward to them testing it on the Media Moguls. R2x1 (4628)
