801428 2009-08-15 20:15:00 Prognostication time:

I feel that Windows 7 will be the last Windows OS as we now know it .

I know they are working on Windows 8, but somehow I believe that with Server-OSs and things like Clouds and Google OS will be the death knell to harddrive installations and CDs with OSs on them .

Maybe even ISP OSs are in the future .

Thoughts?

801430 2009-08-15 20:44:00 SJ, I am on the same wavelength as you on this matter, but M$ knows how to squeeze lots of $$$ out of people so they will undoubtedly try to create some sort of marketing hype or heavy monopolistic way to get a new OS on PC's.

Yesterday I downloaded several (free of course) Windows 7 desktop wallpapers. Changing WinXP to have a new desktop background is as far as I plan to go with changing my OS although I some day I would like to fiddle around with Linux.

Some who have Vista like it but many others find it a resource hog and lacking drivers for their programs. The performance reviews I have read show no significant improvement over WinXP, for both Win7 and Vista.

I see know reason at all to change from WinXP. If I was bored and curious and did not mind giving M$ more $$$ and if I had a new duo or quad core pc with at least 3 G of RAM, then I might want to try Vista or 7. Some of the features that V or 7 have can be put onto XP (if not exact then similar features) - such as improvement to Windows Explorer or fancy graphic interfaces.

801431 2009-08-15 20:57:00 Recently I heard on Radio NZ National that a high school (north of AKL, Albany I think) saved a huge amount of money by dumping Windows and using Linux on their PC's. The figure I believe was in excess of $100,000.

It is possible that Linux will either eventually kill the M$ OS or at least significantly weaken it's monopoly.

I seriously hope not! If everybody starts enjoying their computers, nothing will ever get done . ;) :banana

Yeah, I definitely want to have a go with Linux. After I get my wireless system :o working, I have a spare hd that is waiting for Linux.

801434 2009-08-15 23:22:00 Online applications are useful sometimes but I wouldn't use them all the time (or want to)

This whole "cloud computing" is just a way to stop people pirating programs, so that instead of buying MS Office you have to pay a subscription online and the application never touches your hard drive, making it impossible to pirate.

This will make Open source software even more appealing.

The next version of Microsoft Office is going to be free online anyway :D You can still buy a retail version though.

801437 2009-08-17 03:10:00 I don't get it - all the hoopla about Office going for free when I use Open Office for free and have for a few years now .

I'm not a power user and maybe it escapes me, but if OO can do what Office does - what's the problem? OO has been free as long as I can remember and I don't think I'll ever need or use W/Office ever again .

Besides, OO should nicely integrate into Google OS anyway - right?
