The idea is to run games in "the cloud" - distant servers connected via the internet - and stream them to your television or computer with as much speed and power as if they were running locally.

Well that depends doesn't it, never mind discussions on the actual hardware, there are too many people in NZ with completely crap internet connections for on thing.

Mine for instance.

Took me 30 hours or so to download a game a short while ago.

801128 2009-08-15 00:37:00 that would never happen unless internet costs dropped dramaticaly, if some hardcore gamer doing 10+ hours a day was streaming everything he would be one poor SOAB hueybot3000 (3646)

That's a bit of a contradiction of terms... "30 hours" vs "a short while ago"!

Greg.

I have no idea what you mean by your contradiction of terms as you state.

I think that pctek downloaded a game within the last two or three weeks and it took her 30 hours to download the game. I have no idea what game this was so for all I know it may have come on 4 or more DVDs at 4+ gigs per ISO or whatever or not.

pctek took 30 hours to download this game and did not say what game it was.

A "short while ago" is a subjective term. It might be a second ago or a week ago or even a few years ago.

As pctek did not tell the erudite members of this forum what game this was as far as I see when this was happening and I did not bother to look it up if she has added to the thread I still have no idea.

I think that article was referring to a very *distant* future.

Until internet is fully accessible to most of the population and at good speeds...

Edit: Oh wait....launching this year! crazy!

801133 2009-08-15 05:12:00 I do wonder though... gamers complain about wireless mice/keyboards not being responsive enough. They also complain about network latency affecting gameplay (and this is when all of the processing is happening locally).

Surely the lag caused by sending high-resolution graphics across the internet would be just as, if not more infuriating?
