Torte: A torte is a cake made with many eggs and usually ground nuts or even bread crumbs instead of or in addition to flour. I'm sure you don't have cake laws, even in Arnie-land. :) |

| 800665 | 2009-08-13 22:44:00 | I think they should be enforcing laws to stop the true idiot drivers on the road, not those answering a business call or texting for directions. Sure, there are people who are idiots while using their cell phone, but I think I'd be more likely to be in a crash with a drunk driver, a drug addict, an old person (one this morning took literally 20 seconds to turn in front of me in the middle of the road, so dangerous) or some rich prick in his Holden who thinks he owns the road. What about iPods/MP3 players in the car btw? I use that wayyyy more than my phone.I've been re-ended twice on the motorway now - once from a guy who was looking down changing his car stereo and another by a girl who was busy text messaging. In both cases, they failed to notice the traffic had suddenly come to a stop. Common sense tells you if you look away from the road while driving, then your reaction time to an event will be slowed - maybe resulting in a near-miss or a crash that may injury (or kill) someone. While making it illegal to look away from the road while driving is silly, stopping people from text messaging or juggling a phone to the ear while talking and driving is something they can do to reduce the number of accidents. It will not stop the idiot factor like the woman I followed on the motorway at 80Km/h who was doing her hair with a hair curler using both hands and driving using her knees to steer (judged from the sudden jerks when correcting her direction). I wonder if the time she saved by doing her hair en route would be worth someones life to her. |

| 800667 | 2009-08-13 22:53:00 | I once watched in some amazement as a woman in the car next to me completely changed her outfit from a business suit to jeans and shirt as she drove along on the San Diego Freeway. I never looked. |

I think they should be enforcing laws to stop the true idiot drivers on the road, not those answering a business call or texting for directions . Sure, there are people who are idiots while using their cell phone, but I think I'd be more likely to be in a crash with a drunk driver, a drug addict, an old person I know two people who have lost family members due to being hit by cars driven by people distracted whilst using their cell phones . The sooner this law comes into effect the better . |

If the politicians had had any go about them when cell phones first came on the scene, then they would have used foresight and educated/regulated against their use in cars at that time. By now, it would have been accepted practice not to use them in cars. It was the same with dogs like Rotweilers and Pitbulls, the polis had a chance to ban importation, but free market forces idealogy ruled instead. Then, on the topic of cell phones, yet another idiot has had to be rescued.....twice. www.stuff.co.nz "The 59-year-old Hastings man has twice found himself unable to cope with snow and cold weather in the Golden Crown area at the north end of the Ruahine Range and had to call for help on his cellphone." "Mr Shadbolt said the man did not have the right equipment and was not fit enough for the tramps he had attempted. "He had no understanding of his capabilities or the environment he was going into," It is an insult to the real tramping fraternity to call him a tramper. There are increasing numbers of so-called trampers whose skill levels are pretty abysmal as regards bushcraft, navigation and being self sufficient. They seem to think that everything will be alright because they carry a cellphone. Rant over :banana |
