882221 2010-05-04 07:55:00 Hi Folks

Just installed a new BTC DVD RW Internal Drive on a Win 2k machine.

It reads and plays CDs OK but when I insert a DVD I get the following error message: "access to the specified device, path or file is denied."

Windows Explorer thinks there's nothing in the drive and asks for a disk to be inserted.

Any help greatly appreciated.

882223 2010-05-04 08:21:00 DVD drives often come without the region code set (so they can ship the exact same configuration globally with less work on their part)

You will need to set the region code first before you can use the drive to play anything (The link Sweep posted explains how to do this)

882224 2010-05-04 11:52:00 Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I checked it out and the DVD drive has already been set to Region 4. It says that it may be changed 4 more times.

I tried inserting Region 4 again anyway but it had no effect, i.e. the drive still thinks it can be changed 4 more times.

The problem hasn't gone away. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance

882225 2010-05-04 12:02:00 Looks like some sites say that error means there's nothing to open the DVD with. Or something in the registry is corrupt. What program are you using? Speedy Gonzales (78)
882226 2010-05-04 12:13:00 I'm using OEM version of Nero Showtime which came with the previous DVD Writer. I couldn't find a version number but the manual is copyrighted 2003, if that helps.

I'll try uninstalling and re-installing Nero.

882227 2010-05-04 12:22:00 Nero ShowTime also says:

"Nero ShowTime was unable to start playing the selected video. Please close Nero ShowTime, start DxDiag.exe application (DirectX diagnostic tool), click tab "Display" and click "Direct Draw Acceleration": "Enable" button. If you can't enable Direct Draw acceleration, please update your video adapter driver."

I follow these instructions but find that Direct Draw Acceleration is already enabled.

In this Nero Suite there is an application called Nero InfoTool. It is able to read the information off the DVD and identify the title and publisher no problem. In fact this tool gives the version numbers of everything: It's Nero StartSmart 1.0.1.27 and Nero ShowTime v1.5.0.37. The burning software is v6.3.1.23

Pretty sure Nero Showtime OEM only had a 30 day trial of DVD playback plus an OEM version of Nero will most likely only work with the drive it originally came with.
Try download VLC play from www.videolan.org and see if that can play a DVD.

882230 2010-05-04 13:18:00 Hi CyaBro

Thanks muchly: VLC worked. I may as well uninstall Nero and reclaim the HDD real estate.

Thanks to everyone else who chipped in
