2009-08-18 08:53:00 | I guess in 2011 after the cell fone ban has been in place 12 month and the accident rate hasn't gone down the tax collectors will be looking for something else to blame . I know. Incar navigation units I hope not: Dad just bought one with Bluetooth :nerd:

I know. Incar navigation units The other day I was going down a two lane highway and the car next door gradually came over and nearly hit me. They were on their cell phone blabbering away ignorant of the fact they weren't driving straight and swerved back just before impact. Had so many close calls with cell phone users and none with anyone else, that I think the roads might be safer without these idiots. Not sure why hands free isn't banned, that is illogical as it is just a dangerous. |

2009-08-18 09:09:00 | What you have described is the action of a moron, taking away their cell phone wont cure their moronic nature and attitude to driving. | Metla (12) | |
2009-08-18 09:45:00 | Too true don't take it away let the cop borrow it long enough to put it on the road and jump up and down on it | gary67 (56) | |
2009-08-18 09:49:00 | Yeah, cause the cell phones at fault. Seriously, People need to think this through a little better. Raising the standard of driving on our roads will require some real world actions, Not rubbish like banning cell phones or TV campaigns about the number 100. You want it to get better, then how about enforced training every year, and permanent loss of license for repeat offenders.

2009-08-18 13:09:00 | i just thought of something else. you could buy a fake plastic toy cellphone and talk on it and if the cops pull you over they'd be wasting their time because the phone is fake. who would do that? well i guess people who are going to miss talking on their real cellphone :) There is already a law that can be used. Anyone can be charged with driving without due care and attention and this may include driving along a road and trying to answer questions from the back seat from children who are inclined to ask "Are we there yet." etc. I could drive around on my own with a laptop looking for an unsecured Wifi spot. It would not be a cellphone but may well distract me from the actual job of getting from point A to B in a safe manner. May as well ban applying lipstick or shaving with an electric razor for example This is why I would have an excuse for not putting a mother in law in the car I drive. I will agree that when you are in charge of a motor vehicle you should treat it as your job and I mean full time while behind the wheel of what could be used to kill and has been in the past. No excuse in my view to pull out from a Stop sign and fail to notice other traffic because you happen to be distracted by a phone call. What is an accident for example. Unforseen consequences of actions performed by one or more parties or even lack of action like not applying a brake before going in to the curve or not noticing the sign that clearly says 25 KMH before turning left or right as it may be. The first rule of the road is to keep left but a number of people fail to do this for some reason which is why we have head on collisions. I do wonder why cars crash into trees or power poles. It is not as if the trees or power poles actually move into the the path of the intended travel. Maybe this is suicide not assisted by pills and who knows anyway? I have seen the odd accident due to mechanical failure like a drive shaft dropped of or the brakes did not work due to hydraulic oil leakage. But most of the time it is the nut behind the wheel.

2009-08-18 21:12:00 | well said. Metla for transport minister +1 for that! Seriously I was at the point a few days ago after being so pissed off by so many drivers, I was honestly debating starting a "Things you NEED to know while driving" blog and abusing the hell out of bad drivers. I just get so sick of seeing so many people try and do a half-assed attempt at driving, not paying attention at all, daydreaming, even picking their nose can be just as bad as being on a Cellphone, eating a pie for example ... Lets face it, you're the controlling force of over a ton of machinery that can cause mass amounts of havoc and damage if you slip up for even a second! I've been driving with my boss, he drives, I sit in the passengers seat and talk and get pissed off AT LEAST 5-6 times a day at the useless drivers out there. No yelling out the window (That pisses me off too), just small ranting in the car to my boss, and in-general... Banning Cellphones on the one hand is a good idea, but by the same token those who use a Cellphone are also the kind of people who're more likely to get distracted doing something else whilst driving, so lets save us all a ton of trouble and start on-sight shootings ;)
