804261 2009-08-25 22:02:00 Hi Guys
We want to get my mum (who is getting on a bit now) a mobile phone just for safety reasons. She will probably make very few calls.
We think that a contract deal where she can pay by direct debit without having to worry about things would be good.
Which contract system is best do you think Vodaphone's or Telecom's. (I am with 2 degrees but they only have prepay.)
Thanks

804262 2009-08-25 23:47:00 I would be NZ's lowest mobile user except for receiving texts about my morning school van run. Other than that I might make 10 calls and maybe 25 texts a year.

My phone is telecom one and any calls I make are put to my home phone a/c. Cheapest way for me. User pays works!

804263 2009-08-26 00:17:00 having it tied to the phone account would be the best way for your mum GameJunkie (72)

Telecom's CDMA phones on Go Onebill don't cost anything until they're used. The XT network's equivalent is the Combo plan which costs a minimum of $14.95/month with 20 call minutes included.

Interesting... I guess I would have to go prepaid on XT then. I get paid an allowance for phone use in my little job.

Apart from my work, or if I was in business, I can't think of an intelligent use for a mobile phone. In my case that is, before y'all start jumping down my throat...:banana

804266 2009-08-26 05:42:00 The best is a cellphone tied to the monthly phone line account. Otherwise your prepaid credit expires after 1 year if you don't top up. utopian201 (6245)
804267 2009-08-26 07:19:00 I think the cheapest would be Prepay 2 Degrees.

At its 44c a min it beats many Voda/Telecom contracts. You would find that the contracts are not that cheap but the cheap rates kicks in if you make additional calls that are surcharged cos they are a bit cheaper.

For example, Voda's cheapest contract is $16.95 for 20 mins call anytime. Each min equals 85c. Not incl the text of course.

2 Degrees would be $8.80.

804269 2009-08-26 09:16:00 The crucial question is whether or not she will originate calls on it or do you just want to be able to call her to check she is ok.
We are in a similar situation but as she is not able to call (bit too technical) the best option is prepaid and daughter has her on Vodafone Bestmate for $6 per month, Telecom has a similar deal. Usefull to call her while shopping for her stuff etc

Did you read post #4? The "Homephone" connection is what I have, but PaulD says that when the CDMA network is closes, that will be unavailable.
