| 804082 | 2009-08-25 07:04:00 | Lets say that I finish year 12 (form 6) NCEA level 2. Instead of staying in school and finishing a year 13 NCEA level 3. I decide to head over to a polytechnic and do a national diploma level 5 in business or something. Will employers or people look down on this you know not staying to finish year 13 and gaining level 3. Instead doing a level 5 diploma. Also will this make me look like a quitter for not finishing the full 5 years of secondary school. Should I really stay in and graduate and finish form 7 year 13 and then go over to a polytechnic and do level 5 in computing. | forums12345 (15197) | ||

Realistically, if you have had enough with high school, you shouldn't really stay for another yera. You'll be better off heading to polytech now, and do something that you're interested in and will enjoy (and more importantly, will learn something useful for your career). |

Thats something to consider in the future... |

| 804087 | 2009-08-25 15:16:00 | It depends on what you're going to do at the Polytechnic. If its something like computing or another skill, then that should be fine. But when it comes to areas like business, you really do need a proper university. Btw, 4/5 years of HS doesn't really matter. I only did 4 years of HS and no employer has ever asked me about that. |

Contrary to popular belief, getting a level 4 certificate in "computing" doesn't make you an IT whiz, nor does it guarantee job placement, so it's definitely worth sticking through 3-odd years of study at Uni if you do leave highschool now. That said, I tried Uni twice and quit after 6 months both times, so it's more a case here of "do as I say, not as I do" :p |

| 804089 | 2009-08-26 02:19:00 | For most students yr 13 is a big waste of time. I have heard this from many yr 13 students (and from HS teachers). Unless there are concrete plans to go into law, medical or vet sci, after the first or second term of yr 13 pupils mostly give up and start partying. You would be far far better off going to a Polytech so you can get away from school children and enter more of an adult world. Jamuz's suggestion about going from yr12 to uni is generally good but it depends on your personal circumstances, viz. finances, maturity, career goals. | Strommer (42) | ||
| 804090 | 2009-08-26 02:41:00 | Indeed, some students choose to take "recreational" subjects such as Outdoor Education during Year 13 while they decide what to do after that. As for my case, year 13 was definitely very useful for my first year University education. Cheers :) |

| 804091 | 2009-08-26 03:46:00 | I never finished 4th form. But then that was along time ago........ Round here there's a load of guys who haven't bothered with 7th form, some not even 6th form. One is working full time farming now, one has gone to do his electrical apprenticeship, another to do a mechanics apprenticeship and another to do one with a company that builds sheds and stuff for farmers. If you have an idea already and are going to do apprentic4ships or further study at polytech then I wouldn't bother. If you just want to drop out and sit on your bum though, then that would be a stuff up. |
