for another opinion. Its a bit long winded but makes its point in the end.

Or heres a small taste of the article...

The breakdown of the Fairtrade Foundation’s expenditure is telling. In 2008, it spent £2,128,000 on ‘public education and awareness’, more than it gave to producer and product support (13). This sums up what Fairtrade is really all about: educating the public and making us feel better rather than significantly changing conditions in the developing world. As one Fairtrade slogan puts it: ‘Good Coffee, Good Feeling.’ Fairtrade is really about flattering Western consumers, making us feel like we are making a difference; as one newspaper put it when Cadbury’s announced it was going Fairtrade: ‘Good news: eating bars of Dairy Milk is no longer greedy – it’s snacking with a social conscience.’

804543 2009-08-26 10:32:00 Fair trade means you just pay more, so the competition will come along and undercut the fair trade price.
Sure there may be a small percentage of feel gooders who will buy the overpriced stuff but most will buy the cheaper product.

804544 2009-08-26 10:35:00 Yeah, what the article really explains is that the fairtrade deals lock 3rd world farmers into using antiquated practices that leave them unable to lift their standard of living, fairtrade can make things worse ! limepile (96)
804545 2009-08-26 10:41:00 Fairtrade is just another scheme for the fat rich bastard executives to pocket more cash. Nothing more.

If it was fairtrade these shameless greedy cretins won't be paid tens of millions of dollars while the farmers break their backs to earn 1/500th of what they earn.

804546 2009-08-26 10:48:00 Maybe instead of worrying about peasant farmers in some god forsaken third world country we could look closer to home.
How about a company spending 5 mil on its CEO and then putting their technical workers on contract so they dont have to pay them holidays, super sick days.
I reckon that sucks big time.

Maybe it was worth five million to get rid of a pack of whingers who think the world owes them a living. You leftie liberals need to get a grip, we live in the free world where you can earn five million if someone will pay you it.
