1452444 2018-08-09 05:40:00 Today at lunchtime I decided to have a cup of soup, in lieu of Tea or Coffee.

Whilst sipping my soup, I happened to look at the packet and was delighted to find I was drinking “Responsibly grown Tomatoes”.

No mention was made as to whether they were “Environmentally Friendly” or “Sustainable” let alone resistant to “Global Warming”.

Having inwardly digested the Soup, I am still unable to work out the difference between a "Responsibly grown Tomato" and a "Irresponsibly grown Tomato", but feel sure help will be available on this Forum. :D

1452445 2018-08-09 06:12:00 For instance, what type of irrigation system does the farmer use? Is it drip line, sprinkler, gravity, flooding, rotational, furrow, sub irrigation, or surface irrigation? And where is the water drawn from? Some irrigation methods are more environmentally friendly and responsible than others, and some sources are more sustainable than others (wells, rivers, dams, rain barrels, reservoirs) . And then there is the matter of staff welfare to consider: are workers paid a fair wage? Do they have access to medical? What about working conditions? Health, and safety? Many farms have workers living on-site, are the living conditions adequate? What about bio-diversity on the farm, is there a ‘sacrificial conservation section’ that helps maintain plant and insect biodiversity? What about composting, soil fertility, energy use . . . the list can go on .

Fascinating, clearly there is a lot of BS to struggle through before these Tomatoes could be considered “Responsibly Grown” .

Both my father and myself have grown some excellent tomatoes by surrounding them with Horse Manure and that brings to mind the excellent Strawberries grown on the field tile outlet from the Septic Tank .

Clearly the PC Brigade have flourished on BS, which is totally irresponsible . :(

1452447 2018-08-10 03:32:00 As much as it pains me to say so (and oh boy, it really does), I agree with BM here.

It's too easy to slap a meaningless label on a product without any meaning behind it whatsoever.

1452448 2018-08-10 04:01:00 Well, let's consider responsibly.

Should we be growing them at all? All that water usage to produce them, the time spent tending them, potential spraying of them (and copper sulphate is organic BTW), the harvesting and eating of them....that ensures more humans have been fed, should we? There are too many now, not to mention the land taken up by tomato crops, which is taken away from wild animals, thus reducing their habitats.

I think taking that and more into account it is not responsible to grow tomatoes at all.

1452449 2018-08-10 04:20:00 Tomatoes were on sale yesterday in Countdown for just under $10/kg ... hardly responsible when Pak'n Save cherry tomatoes were about half that price. WalOne (4202)
1452450 2018-08-10 05:11:00 Responsibly grown is an OLD rating level for produce, where health (chemicals) and environment (waste) is taken into consideration. Kame (312)
1452451 2018-08-10 06:42:00 But wait, there’s more .

Seems like these “Responsible Tomatoes” are a very minor ingredient, given all the irresponsible other ingredients!

That does it for me, back to Tea or Coffee . :)
