2018-08-07 07:09:00 | All of youse guys who remember the 'free' upgrade to Win 10 a while back - and to those who didn't go for it --- here's some new (er) news! Microsoft Monday: Rumor About Monthly Windows Charges . Microsoft Monday is a weekly column that focuses on all things Microsoft . This week Microsoft Monday features news about a rumor circulating about monthly Windows charges, an update on the Surface Go, Skype Classic not being phased out yet, the Movies Anywhere integration and much more! _________________________ Last week, Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly published an article detailing a trail of breadcrumbs that indicates that a monthly fee could be implemented to maintain the Windows 10 operating system . Citing a report by ZDNets Mary Jo Foley, Kelly pointed out that Windows 10 may soon have a Microsoft Managed Desktop feature, which will include a monthly fee for configuring computers running on Windows 10 and to ensure a smooth software update experience . Microsoft currently charges for a subscription bundle, which includes Windows 10 and Office 365 called Microsoft 365 and Windows 10 Enterprise . It is rumored that the subscription model will be applied to businesses initially . Microsoft already has a number of the pieces in place to make this happen such as a Windows Autopilot automatic device provisioning service, device financing programs like Surface Plus and a Surface as a Service leasing program, wrote Foley in the report . Foley said that one of her contacts said that Bill Karagounis is going to be in charge of the Microsoft Managed Desktop program . | 1452367 | 2018-08-07 07:37:00 | or: www.howtogeek.com Once again, sensationalist clickbait is claiming Microsoft will soon require a subscription fee to rent your Windows operating system. This just isnt true. Microsofts desktop as a service plan is only for businesses, and it also includes hardwarenot just software.

This just isn’t true. Microsoft’s “desktop as a service” plan is only for businesses, and it also includes hardware—not just software. I knew something like this had to be the case ;) |

2018-08-07 22:43:00 | I guess it is possible . . . . . but its also possible they could demand everyone have a chip implanted in their brain if they want to use new versions of Win . :waughh: Easy to speculate & come back with nonsense . Just more lazyness from so called Tech Writers : dont do any research , just repeat rumors & dribble . Joe Public goes into local shop to spend $1000 on a new laptop . Shopkeeper says, yes thats $1000 & $100 a year to rent Windows, and $100 a year to rent MS Office . Joe public replies with, nope not paying rental fees for a PC , sell me a Mac instead .

2018-08-08 05:02:00 | Click bait alright -- its funny how some writers jump in and don't really appear to know what they are writing about. Looking at the Part that's posted as well as the full article the key wording there is "Kelly pointed out that Windows 10 may soon have a Microsoft Managed Desktop feature, " This is NOT the actual Windows OS installed, its a cloud based OS (access from ANY OS, Windows, Linux, Apple OS). Managed Desktop is your desktop in the cloud. A desktop that feels and behaves like a Windows PC, but delivered from our New Zealand data centres. The result is your data, business applications and the latest Microsoft Office technologies are always ready for you whether in the office, at home, at the airport or overseas. Managed Desktop is a virtual platform that eradicates the need for on-site servers, it removes your dependency on local PCs and liberates your staff to work from home, or on the road without needing to mess around with fussy VPN connections. Source (www.lucidity.co.nz) In English , a cloud based VM you can access from anywhere --- So should they be charging for that --YES.

2018-08-08 05:39:00 | To be fair, read what they actually said: "Last week, Forbes contributor Gordon Kelly published an article detailing a trail of breadcrumbs that indicates that a monthly fee could be implemented to maintain the Windows 10 operating system . Citing a report by ZDNets Mary Jo Foley, Kelly pointed out that Windows 10 may soon have a Microsoft Managed Desktop feature" So now lets click that link: "Microsoft's got a new plan for managing Windows 10 devices for a monthly fee Microsoft is putting together a service aiming to take the pain out of procuring, provisioning and managing Windows 10 devices that it's currently calling the 'Microsoft Managed Desktop . ' Mary Jo Foley" So it really comes down to how a reader interprets it . No-one actually said all users will pay for their O/S, did they . . .

2018-08-08 05:56:00 | So it really comes down to how a reader interprets it. No-one actually said all users will pay for their O/S, did they... Totally agree. The Managed Desktop they mention is basically a VM in the cloud. Same thing as if I used a VM from one of my servers. Unless I told you it was a VM you'd never know going by the desktop or open apps, internet etc. If people wanted to use a cloud based VM (Managed Desktop) the why shouldn't they pay for it. Someone has to maintain and host it.
