1452072 2018-07-27 21:55:00 Theologians today generally see Hell as the logical consequence of using free will to reject union with God and, because God will not force conformity, not incompatible with God's justice and mercy .

Different Hebrew and Greek words are translated as "Hell" in most English-language Bibles . They include:

"Sheol" in the Hebrew Bible, and "Hades" in the New Testament . Many modern versions, such as the New International Version, translate Sheol as "grave" and simply transliterate "Hades" . It is generally agreed that both sheol and hades do not typically refer to the place of eternal punishment, but to the grave, the temporary abode of the dead, the underworld .

"Gehenna" in the New Testament, where it is described as a place where both soul and body could be destroyed (Matthew 10:28) in "unquenchable fire" (Mark 9:43) . The word is translated as either "Hell" or "Hell fire" in many English versions .

The Greek verb "ταρταρῶ (tartarō)", which occurs once in the New Testament (in 2 Peter 2:4), is almost always translated by a phrase such as "thrown down to hell" .

Problems:

Vindictive justice is not compatible with the God of love and compassion .
The punishment does not fit the crime .
Hell contradicts the Christian assertion of the final victory of God over evil .

So telling a lie for instance . All kids do this, it is a part of mental development . I didn't take Xs toy . . .
Now lets say this kid is then killed in an accident .

God then chucks said kid into a burning pit to be tortured forever after?
It's not a bit of a sunbather, it's generally accepted nasty tortures are performed, pain and suffering abound . Forever .
Not a few weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, forever .

Forever is rather a long time . . . even if you committed a worse sin, really? Forever?

But of course, if Catholic for instance, you can escape all this, by seeing your local priest and being given a few phrases to repeat over a number of times .
Thus you're free from Hell .

And what crimes are up for Hell anyway? Depends who you ask .
Eating meat on Fridays .
Wearing clothes made of more than one material
Growing multiple crops in one piece of dirt .
Failing to include salt in offerings to God
Eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof
Going to church within 33 days after giving birth to a boy
Going to church within 66 days after giving birth to a girl
Picking up grapes that have fallen in your vineyard
and any number of stupid stuff found actually in the bible,

Of course large chunks of it are ignored nowdays, being somewhat incompatible with modern rules, or just plain ridiculous .
Why?
One minute you are supposed to believe and follow it all, but oh we'll skip certain bits?

Apparently it is OK to keep slaves, but just so long as they are of another nation . Why is this now not a thing?

Anyway the whole concept of hell is just silly . Or if not silly, then I can only conclude the most evil being of the lot is the one that came up with the idea .

Yip ... I do that as a matter of course with all of Piroskas' quotes; although she never says they're quotes, she just doesn't acknowledge the source or the author. I do that because sometimes it's useful to know what the author is actually saying before - and after - the quoted passage.

Re Hell, my own thoughts are that much of the Bible is allegorical. The God of the Old Testament is a vengeful, nasty piece of work - but a useful invention in keeping the f..flock in line, and conferring a certain amount of power onto the priesthood.

Most people cannot imagine a more horrible demise than burning, hence being condemned to an eternity of being burned alive is a fate worse than death. Or similar dead metaphors. On the other hand, Islam has a certain amount going for it with the promise of every Muslim teenage boys' dream in the form of 7 virgins at one's exclusive disposal. (Or is it 20? Whatever, God is either a consummate magician or a major real estate owner - or both - in order to accommodate the sheer numbers involved).

1452079 2018-07-28 12:22:00 Hell is probably either patented, or about to be, by MS, Apple or Google.
To get to your goal, just use Apple Maps.

And you can bet that the Government is trying to figure out how to put a tax on it. Not the Greens though they will demand that it be banned on the grounds that too much carbon is involved in its operation.
