1451546 2018-07-16 20:17:00 What a bloody rip off! We can't pay the nurses who save lives all the time, yet they seem to be prepared to spend $26Million on recovering the remains. That will not be the end of it. The bodies will be in such a state that DNA testing will have to be done to identify them.

I ask you; would you rather remember your loved ones as they were when you last saw them, or as a stinking, rotting pile of bones? They are already buried, leave them in peace. The mine is not going to be reopened, so erect a Marble wall at the blocked entrance with the names of the deceased, and a garden. Leave them in peace. They don't deserve the indignity of being shovelled into sacks and disposed of.

Bloody well said!

I put it to you, they are not our next of kin, or loved ones, so I guess our opinion on what should happen doesn’t count for much.

However, the $26m - $35m price tag looks excessive and my suspicious mind is telling me that this price tag is just an excuse to break an Election Promise, now the votes have been counted. :annoyed:

I still want to see Tenders called and see how Reputable International Mining Company’s or Civil Engineering Company’s appraise the situation.

1451549 2018-07-16 23:50:00 Its too much.
I'm sorry we need to tell the families (and Bernie Monk) to move on.
Build a nice memorial (I think there may be one there already)
They have had enough compensation and hand outs from us already

True.

Right up to the point where they want millions of our money to pay for it. Then our opinions count for everything.

1451551 2018-07-17 00:22:00 mzee said it, and allblack reposted it again.

If anyone missed it, here it is again, being the sanest commentary, yet made on the debacle ...

1451552 2018-07-17 00:36:00 Pike happened because of the she'll be right kiwi attitude.
Laws were put in place to try & stop this ever happening again.
It would require a law change just to allow re-entry of a known to be unsafe workplace.

So no one is going to sign off on a re-entry, they could be held personally responsible & could face jail time just for allowing re-entry if something goes wrong.

I know what I’d be doing.

I’d approach Reputable Mining Company’s to see if they wanted to purchase a Coal Mine. ;)

(After all, the Coal is no damn use to anybody where it is.)

Then, as part of the deal, the recovery of the bodies, where possible, becomes a Special Condition of Contract.

May not work, but at least the Tax Payers would know how their money was accounted for and just how viable the recovery was. :)

1451554 2018-07-17 11:15:00 Why not blow the money on Pike River? They're spending up large everywhere else.
When it looks like running out there will be more taxes, get ready.

"there will be more taxes, get ready" Already here, disguised as delaying the start of the senior's winter warmth subsidy . Disguised as the removal of the $1K - or thereabouts - tax cuts for all New Zealanders .

Mostly spent on fees for first year varsity students .

The drop out rate for first year varsity students is a staggering 20% . It just doesn't make sense to waste taxpayer $$$s in this way .

Why not reward, or give incentives to those who have the focus, the determination to see it through and graduate? Money spent more wisely .

But then any socialist government has never been particularly qualified in the wisdom department .
