1449799 2018-05-23 09:59:00 Have been watching some other youtube videos re setting up the Ubiquiti access points, quite interesting and informative.

Is the 'CloudKey' necessary?

No you can do it all on your PC if you install the software as you would have seen described.

1449801 2018-05-23 10:46:00 I am a bit confused now:

If I run the software from my PC and set it up, does it mean that my PC has to be ON all the time for the AP to work?

You install the software on the PC and use it to set up the AP. You must do that. Once it is set up you can forget it unless you want to make any changes to the AP settings. So no the PC does not have to be On for the AP to work.

There are some good You Tube videos and the Ubiquiti site also has some easy to follow articles on the subject. Like most of this stuff once you figure it out it is easy to do and the professionals who use it all the time and are familiar with it probably wonder why us amatures have a problem with what is second nature to them.

I have my set up working exactly how I want it but without You Tube and Google there is no way I could have got it going.

Am I right to say that the 'CloudKey' is an optional item?

Yes for a small home network I would say so. I have one but realistically it is overkill for most home users. The Cloud key is in effect a dedicated controller for the network which you can log into from any other device to maintain your network. It does mean that nothing needs to be installed for that purpose on your PC. You save around $160 by just using the PC instead of a Cloud Key

You are very welcome. Keep in mind that I am very much an amateur on this stuff. I imagine that the likes of Wainui Tech would have the required Unifi software installed on their laptop and could hook up and have one of these APs running in around 15 mins. I am a lot slower but I always get there in the end :)

1449807 2018-05-26 06:58:00 Do you have an old DSL modem lying around?
Many modems will act as an access point provided nothing is plugged into the DSL line port. (DHCP will also be disabled)

Try plugging your Ethernet cable from downstairs into a LAN port on the modem and see what happens.

You will need to log into it to set up the WiFi SSID and password.

1449808 2018-06-06 10:24:00 We have finally decided to get this (www.pbtech.co.nz)

Set up and running -- signal strength OK but not that impressive.

Have been fiddling around the controller but no way we could connect to 5Ghz band. Googled to no avail. Quite a few people having this issue.

No option to choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz to connect to (from device, like my phone which supports 5Ghz).
