2018-07-18 00:05:00 | I dislike the term "partner," used a lot these days. It seemed to be, originally, a name for unmarried people, possibly trying to hide the fact that they are not married. I am proud of the fact that I am married and am proud of my wife. If I was not married I would most probably refer to SWMBO as my girlfriend. In other words, tell it as it is. I would not be trying to pretend that she is something that she is not. Let's not pretend. Don't use "partner." What's wrong with the term "de facto"? Or "couple"? That is certainly telling it as it is.

2018-07-18 00:08:00 | I use the term partner as I find the term "girlfriend" sounds too high-school... Maybe if I was teens/early twenties but we are both in our 30s and girlfriend just sounds a bit odd when you are referring to SWMBO.

2018-07-18 00:16:00 | They use the term 'partner' to indicate that it is of a permanent nature, rather than 'girlfriend', who are often temporary. Of course these days with the changes in law, there are no 'illegitimate' children. Previously children born out of wedlock had no rights of inheritance to the father's estate. This was the real reason for marriage. It has nothing to do with religion or love.

2018-07-18 00:40:00 | I use the term partner as I find the term "girlfriend" sounds too high-school... My logic too. If you're both adults you have a partner, or wife/husband if married.

I am proud of the fact that I am married and am proud of my wife/QUOTE] Hide? No. Some people care not if they followed an outdated, originally religious ceremony. Some still do not. Some have same sex husbands or wives. It's easier to say partner because it is gender neutral and religious ceremony (or not) neutral as well. Good for you if you are happy with this ceremony, but personally I don't care much either way, marry or not. More important is how you treat each other and if you commit to the relationship and work at it or not. |

2018-07-18 00:59:00 | Different generations piroska, see things differently. SWMBO and I have our 50th wedding anniversary coming up in October. An achievement these days. We got married in the days when it was immoral to live together unless married. "Living in sin" as it was called, sounded quite exciting but definitely a no go area. However, marriage suits us and we like the names "husband HWDAHIT and wife SWMBO" Ken P.S. HWDAHIT = He Who Does As He Is Told :)

2018-07-18 01:11:00 | I think for same sex couples it was also used to stop a lot of the stupid/rude questions that would come from those who assume (assuming a married woman always has a husband rather than wife), or the downright nasty ones who don't like it and want to force their opinions on others.. | psycik (12851) | |

2018-07-18 02:30:00 | I refer to my wife by her name Most strangers immediately guess who I'm referring to but occasionally they ask. To me, using her name is more indicative of a close relationship than "my wife" "My wife" would put her in the same category as my doctor, my panelbeater, my shrink (if I had one!) Certainly it sounds odd when a public figure says "my wife" on television "Mrs Micro" is the closest I can get to her name without actually using it, rather like SWMBO
